NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 1/12/23

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Big boy slate here everybody, and with no Matthews (potentially) or McDavid, this slate becomes interesting. Like always I will be going over my 2 favorite stacks of the day, but there are several interesting options to choose from. Boston is in a good spot, but is tough to fit into a single lineup; but Pastrnak is great to build around for cash games. The Senators are in a similar boat, and in a pretty good spot against Arizona. The Leafs are looking to get some revenge against Detroit, and without Matthews potentially, this spot becomes interesting. Morgan Rielly is a nice play from this game, as is Jake Walman. Whoever the Hurricanes decide to guard their net will be the chalk goalie of the slate.

Correlated Snipe #1

Max Pacioretty – Sebastian Aho – Seth Jarvis

Columbus is terrible, they have no identity or defense, and the Canes are an absolute wagon. My sources as of right now are telling me that this is the Canes top line, that correlate on the first powerplay unit as well, and I love it. Aho and Jarvis have played with each other for a while now, and Pacioretty is just plain ole good. The man everyone calls Patches loves to shoot the puck, and has not slowed down in Carolina; in fact he had 2 goals vs the Blue Jackets in Columbus just last week. I really don’t have too much to add here. This correlation/stack is cost efficient, talented, and in a good spot.

Correlated Snipe #2

Nathan Mackinnon – Artturi Lekhonen

These 2 have correlated for a while, but with Nichushkin out, and Rodriguez likely slotting in (but not on the powerplay), I see these 2 as a great mini-stack in all formats. If saving some salary I don’t mind Rantanen and Compher, but Mackinnon is the best player and DFS play of the slate. Cale Makar is stackable in any Avalanche build. Colorado is in Chicago who is the worst team in the league, and are without Patrick Kane. There is potential for the Avs to go up big and let the big boys chill out in the 3rd; but if that happens, then the big boys probably did a ton of damage. That, and the NHL today is way different to where even the Chicago young guns are at least fast and can score. To cap it off, the resources I use are showing Petr Mrazek as the starting goalie for Chicago, who I attack every single time. He is quite simply poop.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Tyler Bertuzzi – I am not sure where he will slot into the lineup, check your sources later in the day; but he will most likely be way too cheap for his upside. He may be doing his Leafs tryout tonight before the trade deadline.

Grinder #2

Kirill Marchenko – Probably the Blue Jackets 3rd or 4th best offensive player right now. Nobody ever knows what the Blue Jackets will do with their lines, but we have seen hat trick upside form this young, tall, goofy Russian.

Grinder #3

Calle Jarnkrok – Has been playing with Tavares and Marner for a while now, and if Matthews misses again, this line becomes the top line. Cheap upside.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
