NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 11/12/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Big slate tonight with a few smashing games, as well as some un-sexy ones I am simply avoiding. Matthews and Mackinnon are both on this slate, but McDavid is not, because he plays earlier in the afternoon. Honestly I am not playing Matthews or McDavid in their situations, even though the Leafs aren’t in a bad spot. I actually like the Canucks against the Leafs, who are on the second leg of a back to back, and they don’t know who their goalie is going to be. If rolling out the Canucks, I like the Pettersson, Kuzmenko, Mikhayev line the most. The Colorado Mackinnons are playing the Carolina Svechnikovs in an expensive battle of no goals. Some world class talent is on both of these teams, but this game is sporting 2 top 5 defenses in the entire NHL; which makes me uninterested. The Islanders are at home against the defenseless Blue Jackets, who are now without Zach Werenski for the entire season. Mathew Barzal has 15 assists in as many games, and is averaging 10 fp’s a game without a single goal. A player as good as him won’t shoot 0% forever, so buy low here if playing the Islanders. There are some interesting games like the Bruins vs Sabres and the Rangers vs Predators, but I am going an even weirder route than that for my 2 favorite stacks. Ilya Sorokin will be the chalk goalie of the slate, followed by whoever the Devils roll out there.

Correlated Snipe #1

Trevor Zegras – Troy Terry – Maxime Comtois
With all of these high-profile studs on the slate, Zegras and Terry may go overlooked here against the Blackhawks. All 3 of these guys love to shoot the puck, and the most expensive of the 3 is not the kid who is on a video game cover; but the no-nonsense, I’m putting up 40 goals Troy Terry. Maxime Comtois is also a nice little player who is now slotted in on the top powerplay unit with these guys. If wanting to go all out Ducks, John Klingberg is the 4th one I would suggest who plays top D-pairing minutes and quarterbacks their powerplay. The Blackhawks have a bad defense on paper, as well as shotty goaltending. The Ducks at home are primed here to carry the stress of being the late slate hammer. Think about it, you pick a random stack like the Devils that pops off early, then you are lurking in the weeds watching everyone pass you; then, BOOM, a couple of giant goals later you are catapulted to the top of the leaderboard!

Correlated Snipe #2

Jesper Bratt – Jack Hughes
Speaking of the Devils here we are. The Devils are an absolute wagon, and the wagon should not stop rolling in a home game against the Coyotes. It’s Saturday night, the team is looking for 9 straight wins, and the fans are actually starting to finally show up to Devils games instead of in my Twitter mentions. It would be so Devils to lose a Saturday home game against the Coyotes, but there is no evidence of them slowing down. It also should be mentioned that the Coyotes really aren’t THAT bad. If pairing a 3rd guy with Bratt and Hughes, I suggest either their line-mate that doesn’t correlate on the powerplay (Erik Haula), or stud powerplay defenseman Dougie Hamilton. The toughest decision is always Hischier’s line vs Hughes’ line, but I will always pick the line that Jesper Bratt is on. This is a win/win for me. Either my Devils tout is correct, or 17,000 Devils fans go home sad on a Saturday night and tweet at me about how terrible the Blue Jackets are.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1
Lucas Raymond – Insultingly cheap, has 6 goals in his last 7 games.
Grinder#2
Clayton Keller – Way too talented at this price point; also, he is producing nicely this season.
Grinder #3
Kirby Dach – Too cheap, let’s put some respect on Kirby Dach’s name. This giant young forward is not who the old crusty Penguins want to see on a back to back.
Grinder #4
Jake Bean – This is the cheapest we will se Jake Bean all season. He is an active defenseman who has a major opportunity to prove himself to the world. Zach Werenski, Adam Boqvist, and Nick Blankenburg are all out for at least the next 2 months. Jake Bean should see top pairing minutes, as well as the top powerplay unit. Buy low here, this is the cheapest he will ever be. Bean will be in 100% of my lineups in all formats. When I go to Chipotle tomorrow and they ask if I want black or pinto beans, I will say no thank you, I will have Jake’ Bean. I’m sure it’ll go great.
