NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/22/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Pretty big slate with some interesting matchups. The 3rd stack I like the most, excluding the 2 main ones I write up here would be the Pittsburgh Penguins top line. The Penguins historically kill the Blue Jackets, especially Jake Guentzel. Guentzel however, is probably not going to play, so we shall await official lines. The Kings/Capitals game also could pop off, and the Kings top line is fairly cheap on DraftKings. The Stars top line against the Canadiens also intrigues me; as does the Canucks top lines against the Buffalo Sabres. Auston Matthews will pop off at some point this year, and is cash game viable; and Juuse Saros is probably the chalk goalie of the slate.

Correlated Snipe #1

Tage Thompson – Alex Tuch – Jeff Skinner

The Canucks have not won a game this year, and of-course that will change at some point; and possibly even tonight, but I think Buffalo can still put up 4 or more goals. If a team can score 4 or more goals at a moderate price-point where the top line correlates 100% on the powerplay as well; I will take my chances on that situation. Rasmus Dahlin has had a stellar start to the year with over 20 fantasy points and goals in each game this season. This pattern obviously is unsustainable, and honestly this stack may be leverage off of Dahlin, unless people are really stacking 4 Sabres on the road in western Canada. That actually is another way to go, but is super ballsy. Either way, I like the Sabres ceiling in this matchup.

Correlated Snipe #2

Mikhael Granlund – Filip Forsberg – Matt Duchene

The Predators are at home against the off to a hot start, but also still terrible Flyers. Nashville is a true home ice advantage, and the top line always has one of the highest ceilings on the slate. They correlate on both the top line and the top powerplay unit, which is what I tend to target. What also helps is that they have not popped off yet, so their ownership should be somewhat low; which helps with tournament takedowns when the ceiling hits.  Much like Rasmus Dahlin in my Buffalo description, Roman Josi is the more expensive and higher upside option. Josi had a goal called back on Thursday against the Blue Jackets, so he still hasn’t registered a point this season. Even without a single point, Josi has put up double digit fantasy points in every single game; which shows how active he is. If you want to get cute you could skip Duchene and go Josi. In predators stacks, I would never ever skip Forsberg.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Evgeny Kuznetsov – Way too cheap on DraftKings. Cash game safe. He is back from his suspension for attempted murder, and ready for multiple assists to Ovechkin.

Grinder #2

Nick Blankenburg – Who? The Columbus defenseman that had a shot, and was blocking shots and taking shots on Tuesday night’s win. A goal and an assist in Thursday night’s win. He actually had some run with Zach Werenski on the top pairing. We all love some cheap defensemen.

Grinder #3

Mikael Granlund – Tons of assists to Forsberg coming up for cheap (potentially).

Grinder #4

Nick Robertson – I honestly don’t know what to expect. He is Jason’s brother, so he should be able to score. He had 2 goals last game. Let’s check Toronto’s lineup to see where he is at.
