NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/20/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Pretty big slate with some interesting matchups. The 3rd stack I like the most, excluding the 2 main ones I write up here would be the Nashville Predators top line. The Predators historically kill the Blue Jackets, especially Filip Forsberg. Forsberg had a 4 goal game against the Blue Jackets, all assisted by Granlund. The Oilers big boys are always chalky and interesting, but the Hurricanes always have a great blueline and goaltending, so I would actually go underweight on McDavid and Draisaitl lines. The Senators/Capitals game also has huge potential to pop off; so get ready to launch those Ovechkin lineups out. The Leafs at some point are going to pop off, and Auston Matthews hat tricks are always beyond in the realm of possibility. Vegas catching the Jets on the second day of a back to back is also interesting to me. The Coyotes also play the Canadiens in a meaningless game of poo; and in tournaments I don’t mind getting super weird here, but it’s not something I’m comfortable with. Most of these games are risky in terms of goalies, but I guess the Boston goalie (probably Ullmark) will be the chalkiest. Another great play that I would be overweight on would be the Kirill Kaprizov line at home against the winless Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are not great at defense, so get those Kaprizov shares in.

Apr 21, 2022; Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Wild left wing Kirill Kaprizov (97) celebrates a goal in the third period with Minnesota Wild right wing Ryan Hartman (38) and Minnesota Wild right wing Mats Zuccarello (36) against the Vancouver Canucks at Xcel Energy Center. Correlated Snipe #1

David Pastrnak – Taylor Hall – David Krejci

The Ducks are always going to be a team I am going to attack. Boston has been scoring a metric butt-ton of goals, and I don’t see them slowing down here. Pastrnak is my main core play tonight, because he has hit the shot bonus in each game; and he is in the midst of a contract year and he knows it. Krejci has had excellent chemistry with Pastrnak so far this season, and right now, Taylor Hall is penciled into that top line. Hall is very capable; but in general, I am just attacking the Ducks, and Boston has been on fire so far this season.

Correlated Snipe #2

Jonathan Huberdeau – Tyler Toffoli – Elias Lindholm

Calgary at home is always an interesting spot. The Buffalo Sabres have played ok to start, but the law of averages is about to catch up to the Buffalo youths I believe. The Lindholm line is slowly building chemistry, and will surely pop off here soon. In DFS we are in the business of making good purchases, and the Flames’ big boys are probably at the cheapest they will be all season; so let’s buy them at home against the Sabres and live with the results. It’s not often that one team makes multiple major changes in one offseason, but the Flames did; and some would say that the Flames may be better off for it roster wise. Like I said, the team is gelling, and it’s time to buy.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Oliver Wahlstrom – He has been on fire to start the year. Let’s ride the wave and enjoy; he also loves to shoot, which is points by itself.

Grinder #2

Nick Blankenburg – Who? The Columbus defenseman that had a shot, and was blocking shots and taking shots on Tuesday night’s win. He actually had some run with Zach Werenski on the top pairing. We all love some cheap defensemen.

Grinder #3

Mikael Granlund – A Blue Jacket crusher. tons of assists to Forsberg coming up for cheap (potentially).
