NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/17/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Holy smokes we have a bunch of games tonight. I guess excluding the 2 stacks I like the most, I will mention a few ideas I like in my opener here. Keep in mind on a slate like this, ownership will be spread out across the board in tournaments, so don’t worry about getting too cute. 2 of the chalkier spots are going to be the Rangers’ big boys at the Garden against the Ducks (who stink), as well as the Penguins at the Bell Centre against the made up Canadiens defense. The Penguins and Rangers have been on fire this year, and I do recommend them in some capacity; but, from a points per dollar aspect, as well as their potential ceilings, I prefer my 2 primary stacks. Alex Ovechkin also always has to be accounted for, especially at home in a decent matchup; but it’s simply not the spot at his salary where I am going to chase his points.

Correlated Snipe #1

Anze Kopitar – Kevin Fiala – Adrian Kempe

The Kings top guys are figuring it out early, and in a big way. They each had 3 points in their last game against the Minnesota Wild and Marc-Andre Fleury. Their chemistry is building with each practice and game, and they are getting the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit. The Wings are a very young and offensive-minded team that are going to play in some barn-burners this season. The Kings on the other hand have a combination of veterans and youngsters, and Anze Kopitar is super smart and is very good at forcing younger teams to make crucial mistakes. Somehow, on DraftKings, this line’s salaries have not increased, and I will be hammering the over on them.

Correlated Snipe #2

Auston Matthews – Mitch Marner

Another 2 man stack? Ok, let me explain. Michael Bunting is capable of scoring, and is a part of their line, but is not on the powerplay with them. He is also too expensive for his actual talent level. Morgan Reilly is also a stackable option with Matthews and Marner, but not super necessary if you can’t fit an expensive defenseman in your lineup. Toronto is going to score a bunch of goals again this year, and most of it will come from Matthews/Marner. They are once again in a great spot against a very terrible and out of sorts Coyotes team that has a shotty blueline. The Coyotes are in full tank mode, and are trying to win the draft lottery this season. This is a true get-right spot for the Leafs. Matthews also loves playing at home. Not much to add here to be honest. In a giant slate where everyone will be stacking everything under the sun, I will be playing the best goal scorer on the planet, at home, in a plus matchup. I promise I won’t write the Leafs up every time, but this is a gimme spot.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Dylan Strome – Very cheap, and has been centering the top line, as well as the top powerplay unit with Ovechkin this year. With that role comes high ceiling games

Grinder #2

Alexis Lafreniere – Picked up 2 assists last game. Is finding his touch, and gives you leverage off of the Ranger’s top players.

Grinder #3

Matty Beniers – Too cheap for the Kraken’s top center on both 5v5 and the powerplay. Andre Burakovsky is also too cheap, and stacks everywhere with Beniers.

Grinder #4

Elmer Soderblom – a 6’8 created player with handles. This is a pure punt play, but his talent level and what he brings is kind of hilarious.
