NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/15/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

Holy smokes we have a bunch of games tonight. I guess excluding the 2 stacks I like the most, I will mention a few ideas I like in my opener here. Keep in mind on a slate like this, ownership will be spread out across the board in tournaments, so don’t worry about getting too cute. Alex Ovechkin and the Caps are in a nice spot against the Canadiens and their computer-generated defensemen (Jake Allen can’t make 50 stops every game). Also, with all of the studs available tonight, I do not deem McDavid/Draisaitl stacks a necessity in cash games. The Flames have one of the best bluelines in the league, as well as strong goaltenders. Actually, the Flames stacks look too cheap on DraftKings. Huberdeau, Lindholm, and Toffoli, correlate everywhere, and seem like really good plays as well. The Blues are also playing their home opener, and are getting the crappy Blue Jackets on the second game of a back to back. Jeremy Swayman is probably going to be the cash game goalie you want to plug into those cash lineups.

Correlated Snipe #1

David Pastrnak – David Krejci

2 man stack? Sure, why not? Krejci put up 3 points in his first game back in the NHL, and Pastrnak can score from anywhere. Pastrnak is also amidst a contract year, so he probably wants 50 goals to secure the bag, right? Boston has weird lines and a new coach, but still a ton of veteran talent, and are in their home opener against the (not a real NHL team) Arizona Coyotes. Sorry Coyotes fans (not really). Are there any Coyotes fans that actually exist? If so, throw me some hate. Pastrnak and Bergeron are now on different lines, and only correlate on the powerplay; whereas, Pastrnak and Krejci correlate on both their regular line and on the powerplay. Hampus Lindholm is also stackable in Boston Bruins stacks, but not necessary. Bergeron/Hall is also a viable option, but for leverage off of them, as well as a hot start, I am going with Krejci/Pastrnak here.

Correlated Snipe #2

Auston Matthews – Mitch Marner

Another 2 man stack? Ok, let me explain. Michael Bunting is capable of scoring, and is a part of their line, but is not on the powerplay with them. He is also too expensive for his actual talent level. Morgan Reilly is also a stackable option with Matthews and Marner, but not super necessary if you can’t fit an expensive defenseman in your lineup. Toronto is going to score a bunch of goals again this year, and most of it will come from Matthews/Marner. They are once again in a great spot against a very offensively inclined Senators team that has a shotty blueline. Matthews also loves playing at home. Not much to add here to be honest. In a giant slate where everyone will be stacking everything under the sun, I will be playing the best goal scorer on the planet, at home, in a plus matchup.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Erik Brannstrom – Back to the well here. This kid has talent, fills a cheap defenseman spot for you, and should have a decent floor in a very fast-paced game.

Grinder #2

Justin Danforth – Keep an eye out for who plays on Johnny Gaudreau’s line with Laine out. I think it could be Chinakhov, but there are rumors of Danforth for some reason. I don’t really like him, but the Columbus coaches have a stiffy for him for some reason.

Grinder #3

Rasmus Andersson – Too cheap in an up and down matchup in the battle of Alberta. Top powerplay unit, and does a bit of everything.

Grinder #4

Mikhail Sergachev – Too cheap for his new expanded role on the Lightning. Shot blocking machine.

Grinder #5

Mat Barzal – That price is too low on DraftKings. The Ducks are just ok.
