NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/14/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey

4 gamer tonight, and all 4 are home openers. The Blue Jackets home opener is against the Lightning, the Sharks host the Hurricanes, the Red Wings host the Canadiens, and the Jets host the Rangers. I really like the offensive spots of he few of these teams here, and then there is one mixed bag that I am not sure about, and then one game I will barely be touching. The wildcard game where anything can happen is the Columbus vs Tampa Bay game, and there are 2 talented goalies in this one; as well as a bunch of question marks on the Columbus side. The game I’m simply not that interested in would be the Hurricanes vs Sharks game, because the defenses should be stout, and both teams kind of play a methodical and hard style. Frederik Andersen should be the highest owned goalie on the slate tonight.

Correlated Snipe #1

Dylan Larkin – Tyler Bertuzzi – Lucas Raymond – Moritz Seider

Detroit’s home opener should be exciting for that city, because they signed a plethora of good free agents, and that city is just hockey crazy. The Larkin line with Bertuzzi and Raymond played nearly all year together last year, and they’re looking to build on that chemistry. The Canadiens blueline is going to be a giant question mark all year, with a bunch of NHL23 computer generated players, and an old and subpar goalie as their number one in Jake Allen. I added Moritz Seider in this stack, because he is a great young defenseman that won the Calder Trophy last year, that plays on the top powerplay unit with these guys; and is a mere $5100 on Draftkings. This stack is super affordable, and super viable in all formats.

Correlated Snipe #2

Mark Scheifele – Nikolaj Ehlers – Kyle Connor

The Jets are a controversial team given their locker room fiascos and drama surrounding their team last year, but they are still very offensively inclined and talented, and I love their spot tonight. They should be getting a tired and jetlagged Rangers team that is on their second game of a back to back, as well as their 3rd game in 4 days. The crowd in Winnipeg is no joke, and it is the Jets home opener and first game of the season. Mark Scheifele is still here after rumors of a trade request, and he is still giant and a good playmaker to set up Ehlers and Connor. Ehlers can absolutely fly on the ice, and is finally getting the opportunity to play with the big boys, Not to mention that Kyle Connor is the most underrated goal scorer in the league; pencil him in for another 40 this season. These guys correlate on the top powerplay unit as well; and should pepper what should probably be the Rangers backup goalie in Jaroslav Halak.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Yegor Chinakhov – The first round pick in 2019 had 6 goals this preseason, is noticeably a better skater, and Patrik Laine is now out, so who knows what opportunities will emerge here.

Grinder #2

Justin Danforth – Keep an eye out for who plays on Johnny Gaudreau’s line with Laine out. I think it could be Chinakhov, but there are rumors of Danforth for some reason. I don’t really like him, but the Columbus coaches have a stiffy for him for some reason.

Grinder #3

Kevin Lebanc – Sharks guy that typically plays top 6 minutes, and loves to shoot that puck.

Grinder #4

Mikhail Sergachev – Too cheap for his new expanded role on the Lightning. Shot blocking machine.
