NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes & Grinders, Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 10/12/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes and Grinders!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

NHL season is here! Check out all of our industry-leading content on dfsarmy.com, and if interested feel free to DM me personally and I’ll get your journey started. Remember, our mission is a process, we grow and learn every day; figure out what our competitors are doing, identify the correct plays, and calculate the correct ways to attack each slate. Every slate is different and can be attacked in different ways. We also have great tools to work with like the domination station (optimizer), the research station, chalk boards, as well as tons of coaches readily available in our discord.

Now – onto hockey!

Normal sized slate here with several huge scoring opportunities for a few of the best offenses in the world. I will tell you guys about my 2 favorites here, as well as a few cheapies (so you guys can afford 2 expensive stacks). Alexandar Georgiev, Matt Murray, and Frederik Andersen will probably be the most popular goalies; and probably in that order. The 3 major stacks that are going to be the highest owned all have top 10 players in the league. Those stacks include Mackinnon/Rantanen, Matthews/Marner, and McDavid/Draisaitl. If stacking any other teams, you are then getting unique in tournaments. The sneaky game to stack could be the Columbus/Carolina tilt that has plenty of offensive upside at a moderate cost. Value may be found in the Kraken/Ducks game as well; my favorite cheapies will be my grinders at the end.

Correlated Snipe #1

Arturri Lehkonen – Nathan Mackinnon – Mikko Rantanen

This is a fairly simple take, and sometimes simplicity is the most sophisticated way of life. This is the best team in the NHL vs the worst team in the NHL. The Blackhawks smell like poo. Their blueline stinks, their goalies are not real goalies, and their GM doesn’t want to win. The suck hard for Connor Bedard sweepstakes has begun, and the Blackhawks are the preseason favorites to win the draft lottery. I wish I had a hotter take. The good news is that people may rather have the Matthews or McDavid lines, so these guys may not be the highest owned. Lehkonen was picked up by Joe Sakic at last year’s trade deadline and it was magic for the Avalanche. These 3 should not only correlate on the top line, but also the top powerplay unit. Best vs worst, fun times.

Correlated Snipe #2

Auston Matthews – Mitch Marner – Michael Bunting

Pretty much the same situation as Mackinnon, aside from the Canadiens being a slight upgrade. The Canadiens have a decently skilled forward group; however, their defense is made up of video game created players, and their goalie is the old journeyman Jake Allen. Toronto is once again going to score piles of goals this season, and Montreal is going to give up even more. I have Auston Matthews on a hat-trick watch, which isn’t really a hot take somehow. I don’t really know how ownership is going to shake out with the 3 killer M’s (McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews) all on this slate, but I obviously told you guys the 2 I prefer. Also, low-key, Marner did score 35 goals last season, he wasn’t just Matthews’ set up man. Bunting is also never a necessity in Matthews/Marner builds, because he typically is not on the top powerplay unit with them.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1-3

Ryan Strome – Mason McTavish – Troy Terry

You can play any of these guys as a one-off, or stack them. This is the Anaheim Ducks 2nd line, and are all talented. The Kraken do no scare me. Troy Terry is my favorite of these 3, as he had over 30 goals last season, and does slot in on their top powerplay unit. McTavish is a talented rookie with not much NHL sample size on, and Ryan Strome is on a big contract off of a nice season on the Rangers.

Grinder #4

John Klingberg – More Ducks? Yep! He is cheap, on the top pair with Cam Fowler, and is listed as on the top powerplay unit as well. Troy Terry to John Klingberg skinny stacks are in play for me.

Grinder #5

Martin Necas – This kid is finally in the top 6 in Carolina. This kid is super talented and I have always loved his game. He is at home vs the Blue Jackets, and has hurt them in recent history. He also slots in on the second powerplay unit.

Grinder #6

Jakub Voracek – Same game, Voracek is in Columbus’ top 6, is an elite playmaker, and is on the top powerplay unit. This super young team will rely on Voracek late in games to create scoring chances for the young guys.
