My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Shane McClanahan
  • Framber Valdez
  • Jesus Luzardo

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes.  Texas Rangers (-130) @ Colorado Rockies

Pitchers:

Rangers – Martin Perez

Rockies – Jose Urena

Rundown:

This game opened with a total of 11. Another Coors game after they put up 13 runs on Tuesday, which I wasn’t expecting. Urena gets hit by everybody so the Rangers definitely stand out. Lowe is going to be one of my top plays. A few of the COL bats have hit Perez pretty well in their careers.

TEX 5-star plays: Nathaniel Lowe

4-star plays: Corey Seager, Leody Taveras

GPP Note: Team ISO of .095 over the last week.

COL 5-star plays: CJ Cron, Charlie Blackmon

4-star plays: Randall Grichuk

GPP Note: Team ISO of .120 over the last week.

Atlanta Braves (-240) @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Pitchers:

Braves – Kyle Wright

Pirates – Mitch Keller

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Braves have guys with great success against Keller but a lot of the lineup has been mediocre recently. Wright could be in a good spot but he’s not somebody I trust every time he’s out there. I think there are better SP options today.

ATL 5-star plays: Austin Riley, Ronald Acuna

4-star plays: Vaughn Grissom, Dansby Swanson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 over the last week.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Bryan Reynolds, Ben Gamel

GPP Note: Team ISO of .105 over the last week.

Los Angeles Angels @ Tampa Bay Rays (-267)

Pitchers:

Angels – Mike Mayers

Rays – Shane McClanahan

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7. I really hope McClanahan comes out with a strong performance because I want to see him battle it out for the Cy Young. Right now it’s Verlander’s to lose after he threw 6 no-hit innings last night. It looks like the Angels will be going with a bullpen game but that could always change.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Mike Trout

GPP Note: Team ISO of .107 over the last week.

TB 5-star plays: Manuel Margot

4-star plays: Yandy Diaz, Harold Ramirez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 over the last week.

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

DFS MLB Weather Picks

Arizona Diamondbacks (-125) @ Kansas City Royals

Pitchers:

D’Backs – Zac Gallen

Royals – Brady Singer

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I love this pitching match-up as Singer has really turned it on. Gallen is one of my guys and I am always going overweight on him. It’s telling that we see a total of 7.5 in KC the day after we saw a game with a total of 9. That’s a pretty big difference in a pitcher’s park.

ARI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Josh Rojas, Christian Walker

GPP Note: Team ISO of .097 over the last week.

KC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Bobby Witt Jr, MJ Melendez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .047 over the last week.

St Louis Cardinals (-220) @ Chicago Cubs

Pitchers:

Cardinals – Miles Mikolas

Cubs – Luke Farrell

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We should see a pretty strong STL performance in this one. I do want to pay attention to the wind at Wrigley. Mikolas has shown some really impressive upside this season. Goldschmidt just keeps hitting and hitting and hitting.

STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt, Lars Nootbar

4-star plays: Nolan Arenado, Dylan Carlson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .204 over the last week.

CHC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ian Happ, Willson Contreras

GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 over the last week.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-250)

Pitchers:

Brewers – Adrian Houser

Dodgers – Andrew Heaney

Rundown:

This game opened with a total of 8.5. Houser wasn’t very good prior to going on the IL and this isn’t a good match-up for him. The Dodgers got to Cy Burnes last night and I think that continues. Heaney had a rough go of it recently but he looks like he could bounceback at home tonight.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Andrew McCutchen, Willy Adames

GPP Note: Team ISO of .204 over the last week.

LAD 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman

4-star plays: Trea Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .175 over the last week.

Cincinnati Reds @ Philadelphia Phillies (-250)

Pitchers:

Reds – TJ Zeuch

Phillies – Cristopher Sanchez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Phillies are in a great spot and are going to end up at the top of my stacking list. I just need to spend more time thoughout the day on Sanchez and what he brings to the table today. I might have to add guys like Schwarber and Stott to my list below.

CIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jake Fraley

GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 over the last week.

PHI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Nick Castellanos, Rhys Hoskins

GPP Note: Team ISO of .185 over the last week.

MLB DFS Research Projections

Minnesota Twins @ Houston Astros (-235)

Pitchers:

Twins – Dylan Bundy

Astros – Framber Valdez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. We just saw Verlander shut down the Twins last night and while Valdez is a different type of pitcher, he should see similar results. The Astros have seen enough of Bundy that I think they end up a top tier stack on the day, as well. I can’t decide who I think goes deep for them.

MIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Carlos Correa, Jorge Polanco

GPP Note: Team ISO of .116 over the last week.

HOU 5-star plays: Kyle Tucker

4-star plays: Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 over the last week.

Chicago White Sox (-125) @ Baltimore Orioles

Pitchers:

White Sox – Lucas Giolito

Orioles – Spenser Watkins

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The names on the mound are guys that I have used at various times but today just doesn’t seem like one of those days. Giolito has an HR issue that could lead to some nice fantasy performances. Watkins might be in a better spot but I keep waiting for the CWS bats to wake up.

CWS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Gavin Sheets

GPP Note: Team ISO of .066 over the last week.

BAL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Cedric Mullins, Adley Rutschman

GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 over the last week

San Francisco Giants (-170) @ Detroit Tigers

Pitchers:

Giants – Logan Webb

Tigers – Matt Manning

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Webb should end up as one of your favorite options since we love to pick on the Tigers at this point. He hasn’t been as great on the road in his career but it’s tough to ignore the spot. Manning hasn’t been terrible at the MLB level this season but he can have issues with LHBs, while the Giants have a bunch of them.

SF 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Brandon Crawford, Joc Pederson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 over the last week.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Riley Greene

GPP Note: Team ISO of .132 over the last week

Miami Marlins (-120) @ Oakland Athletics

Pitchers:

Marlins – Jesus Luzardo

A’s – Cole Irvin

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7. Irvin is definitely in a strong spot but I am more fascinated by Luzardo in his return to OAK. He has been really good for MIA this season, when healthy. We know that both offenses are WELL below average overall. We could see something similar to last night where both SPs put up 20+ DK points.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Miguel Rojas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 over the last week.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Sean Murphy

GPP Note: Team ISO of .144 over the last week.

Cleveland Guardians @ San Diego Padres (-170)

Pitchers:

Guardians – Cal Quantrill

Padres – Blake Snell

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Snell could be a GPP winner tonight with how he has thrown. I just have this fear that we see bad Snell at some point. Quantrill returns to SD and gets them when the lineup is struggling a bit. I still want to side with San Diego as a decent GPP stack because of the names in the lineup.

CLE 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jose Ramirez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .112 over the last week.

SD 5-star plays: Manny Machado

4-star plays: Juan Soto, Jake Cronenworth

GPP Note: Team ISO of .119 over the last week.

Washington Nationals @ Seattle Mariners (-305)

Pitchers:

Nationals – Anibal Sanchez

Mariners – George Kirby

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Kirby should be on our short list of SPs to go heavy on against this WSH lineup. Sanchez is not good at all so we need to be on top of the SEA stack today. I really want to say Julio hits an HR today but he’s been hit or miss of late and I think it could end up being a guy like Suarez.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Luke Voit

GPP Note: Team ISO of .124 over the last week.

SEA 5-star plays: Jesse Winker

4-star plays: Julio Rodriguez, Eugenio Suarez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .200 over the last week.

Toronto Blue Jays (-170) @ Boston Red Sox

Pitchers:

Blue Jays – Jose Berrios

Red Sox – Brayan Bello

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Bello’s worst overall MLB performance came against TOR earlier and that doesn’t bode well for him today. The reports are that he is “opening” with Rich Hill to follow. I would guess that BOS would love for them to combine for 7. Berrios could be a dominant play or he could give up 5 in 3 innings of work.

TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr

4-star plays: George Springer, Lourdes Gurriel

GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 over the last week.

BOS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Alex Verdugo, JD Martinez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .099 over the last week.

Stacks of the Day: Main Slate

  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Houston Astros
