My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Luis Severino
  • Justin Steele
  • Shane McClanahan

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes. With features that allow you to Like 😀 Love 😍 or Dislike 😡 a player, you can create a fully unique pool of players to generate your lineups from every day. Combine the power of the Domination Station with our VIP Only Articles and the MLB Research Station to really take your game to the next level.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Miami Marlins (-190)

Pitchers:

Pirates – JT Brubaker

Marlins – Pablo Lopez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7. Lopez should be in a spectacular spot while Brubaker might be a sneaky play with how little the MIA bats have been doing. If somehow, the total here creeps to 7.5 I would be very interested in the under. I could see some one-off HR hunting in this one.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Daniel Vogelbach

GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 over the last week.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jesus Sanchez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .117 over the last week.

New York Mets @ Atlanta Braves (-155)

Pitchers:

Mets – Chris Bassitt

Braves – Charlie Morton

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. My first look has me torn with this match-up. I use both of these SPs quite a bit but it’s really hard to trust Bassitt against ATL. Morton has a great history against the guys in the Mets lineup so I might look there for a few GPP shares. With all that said, it makes it tough to want to fully stack either side.

NYM 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso

GPP Note: Team ISO of .161 over the last week.

ATL 5-star plays: Austin Riley

4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr

GPP Note: Team ISO of .187 over the last week.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-155) @ St Louis Cardinals

Pitchers:

Dodgers – Tony Gonsolin

Cardinals – Adam Wainwright

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. We get the guy that’s doing things out of nowhere against the guy that’s been doing it basically his entire career. I always use Wainwright at home so I may have to sneak a couple of shares into my MME build. I know the Dodgers are obviously elite but they aren’t averse to being shut down.

LAD 5-star plays: Mookie Betts

4-star plays: Justin Turner, Trea Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .194 over the last week.

STL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Nolan Gorman, Paul Goldschmidt

GPP Note: Team ISO of .068 over the last week.

Houston Astros @ Los Angeles Angels (-135)

Pitchers:

Astros – Cristian Javier

Angels – Shohei Ohtani

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. By the time Tuesday’s slate locked, I ended up with 30%+ of LAA bats. I don’t think I will be doing that in this one, especially since we can’t use Ohtani as a hitter. Ohtani has been great on the mound but this is an interesting match-up. I lean his way but I want a few stacks of HOU.

HOU 5-star plays: Jose Altuve

4-star plays: Alex Bregman

GPP Note: Team ISO of .217 over the last week.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Mike Trout, Brandon Marsh

GPP Note: Team ISO of .082 over the last week.

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

DFS MLB Weather Picks

Boston Red Sox @ Tampa Bay Rays (-165)

Pitchers:

Red Sox – Josh Winckowski

Rays – Shane McClanahan

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7. I’ve been touting McClanahan as a future Cy Young winner since the season started. He has to be one of the favorites right now but this match-up isn’t a slam dunk. I definitely will be using him more than the field. I wish the TB lineup was better so that I could attack Winckowski.

BOS 5-star plays: JD Martinez

4-star plays: Rafael Devers

GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 over the last week.

TB 5-star plays: Yandy Diaz

4-star plays: Harold Ramirez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .130 over the last week.

Detroit Tigers @ Kansas City Royals (-125)

Pitchers:

Tigers – Tarik Skubal

Royals – Brady Singer

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. My first thought is I want the pitchers in this game. Skubal appeared to right some wrongs in his last start while Singer takes on the weak-swinging Tigers. A couple of the Tigers’ bats have plus BvP against Singer but not enough to deter me from using him.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Akil Baddoo, Jonathan Shoop

GPP Note: Team ISO of .098 over the last week.

KC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Emmanuel Rivera

GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 over the last week.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Minnesota Twins (-140)

Pitchers:

Brewers – Aaron Ashby

Twins – Joe Ryan

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Ashby has struggled over his last few starts while he has also struggled on the road this season. That is going to put me on the Twins, even if they let me down tonight. Ryan can shut just about any team down which really intrigues me against a weaker MIL lineup.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 over the last week.

MIN 5-star plays: Carlos Correa

4-star plays: Jorge Polanco, Byron Buxton

GPP Note: Team ISO of .278 over the last week.

Baltimore Orioles @ Chicago Cubs (-140)

Pitchers:

Orioles – Spenser Watkins

Cubs – Justin Steele

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. Looks like the weather is geared more toward pitching tonight in Wrigley so that will move Steele up my list a bit. He is somebody that has surprised me many times and is capable of paying off a price point that is probably too cheap right now.

BAL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ryan Mountcastle.

GPP Note: Team ISO of .106 over the last week.

CHC 5-star plays: Willson Contreras

4-star plays: Seiya Suzuki

GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 over the last week.

MLB DFS Research Projections

Chicago White Sox (-120) @ Cleveland Guardians

Pitchers:

White Sox – Lucas Giolito

Guardians – Aaron Civale

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Giolito is always worth consideration but he also is always at a risk of getting knocked around, HARD. I love his upside but for every few shares, I plan to have a CLE stack. Civale doesn’t worry me much so I definitely want some CWS stacks.

CWS 5-star plays: Luis Robert

4-star plays: Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .133 over the last week.

CLE 5-star plays: Jose Ramirez

4-star plays: Josh Naylor, Nolan Jones

GPP Note: Team ISO of .134 over the last week.

Arizona D’Backs @ San Francisco Giants

Pitchers:

D’Backs – Zac Gallen

Giants – Undecided

Rundown:

Waiting for the Vegas information. I am seeing rumors of a bullpen game for the Giants. I know the SF offense went off on Tuesday night but Gallen is definitely worthy of some play in our builds.

ARI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Josh Rojas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .131 over the last week.

SF 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Mike Yastrzemski

GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 over the last week.

Cincinnati Reds @ New York Yankees (-335)

Pitchers:

Reds – Mike Minor

Yankees – Luis Severino

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. In another game, the Yankees should dominate and probably hit 3 HRs or so in. Severino should be the most popular SP on the day and I won’t be arguing against it. Stanton might end up as my Dinger call with all the HRs he has hit against Minor.

CIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Brandon Drury

GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 over the last week.

NYY 5-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres

4-star plays: Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge

GPP Note: Team ISO of .258 over the last week.

MLB DFS Winning Lineups $50,000

Oakland A’s @ Texas Rangers (-190)

Pitchers:

A’s – Paul Blackburn

Rangers – Jon Gray

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I have been on the Rangers’ bats a lot recently and while I would like to continue, I do think Blackburn has a chance to put up a strong outing after being named an All-Star. By now you guys know how much I dislike Jon Gray but he might be in play, even after OAK put up 100 runs on Tuesday night.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ramon Laureano, Sean Murphy

GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 over the last week.

TEX 5-star plays: Corey Seager

4-star plays: Nathaniel Lowe, Leody Taveras

GPP Note: Team ISO of .211 over the last week.

San Diego Padres (-170) @ Colorado Rockies

Pitchers:

Padres – Joe Musgrove

Rockies – Chad Kuhl

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10.5. Musgrove has allowed 4 earned runs in 13 career Coors innings and those performances came before the current version of Musgrove with the Padres. I am definitely intrigued but I do also know that Coors doesn’t care who is on the mound. Kuhl has been decent at times but I don’t think I want to tempt it by using him as well.

SD 5-star plays: Manny Machado

4-star plays: Nomar Mazara, Jake Cronenworth

GPP Note: Team ISO of .101 over the last week.

COL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Garrett Hampson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 over the last week.

Seattle Mariners @ Washington Nationals (EVEN) – Game 1

Pitchers:

Mariners – Chris Flexen

Nationals – Josiah Gray

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. I actually think Josiah Gray is a very interesting GPP option but he gives me a LOT of HRs (18 on the year). I think Santana and Crawford are the best ways to attack him while J-Rod is always in play with his power/speed combo. Flexen’s reverse splits should help him out in this game and his main concern is a suddenly hot Juan Soto. Since I started this article, the total for this game has come down to 9.

SEA 5-star plays: JP Crawford

4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Julio Rodriguez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .205 over the last week.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Juan Soto

GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 over the last week.

Seattle Mariners @ Washington Nationals (EVEN) – Game 2

Pitchers:

Mariners – Tommy Milone

Nationals – Erick Fedde

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information. We have to remember that teams sometimes flip-flop their SPs for doubleheaders so we need to pay attention to the news throughout the morning.

SEA 5-star plays: Jesse Winker

4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Julio Rodriguez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .205 over the last week.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz

GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 over the last week.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Toronto Blue Jays (-190)

Pitchers:

Phillies – Zack Wheeler

Jays – Ross Stripling

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Color me shocked at the opening Vegas numbers. Wheeler is either being disrespected, Vegas knows something we don’t, or they aren’t aware that Wheeler is on the mound. I will be paying attention to this one all day. I would rather stack against Stripling in this one.

PHI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Kyle Schwarber, Didi Gregorius

GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 over the last week.

TOR 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez, George Springer

GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 over the last week.

Stacks of the Day: Main Slate

  1. New York Yankees
  2. San Diego Padres
  3. Chicago White Sox
