Will Any MLB Player Reach 3,000 Hits Again? Miguel Cabrera Albert Pujols

Detroit Tigers legend, Miguel Cabrera, hit a milestone only 33 other MLB players have ever reached…3,000 hits!  The most recent before him was Albert Pujols back in May of 2018.  3,000 hits is a legendary number just like 500 HRs, 300 wins, and even the elusive .300 career batting average.  Baseball is loaded with numbers, and it’s fans cherish every single one of them.  So, for the casual fan, Miggy hitting 3,000 was a huge deal.

Perhaps even more impressive, Cabrera is only the THIRD player in MLB history to knock down the big three:  3,000 hits, 500 HRs, and a .300 career batting average.  In this era of “homerun or strikeout,” the .300 batting average is likely going the way of the dinosaur.

The combined league average in 2021 was a paltry .231 according to Baseball-reference.com.  And, we don’t need to look back too far to see more impressive hitting numbers.  Just ten years ago, in 2011, the league average was 20 points higher at .255.  And, 20 years ago (2001), it was another ten points higher at .264.  No doubt the times, they are a changing.

So, Who Might Be Next to Reach MLB’s 3,000 Hit Club?

It could be a really, realllllly long wait.

Not just because of “the shift” or baseball’s declining batting average.  Simply stated, no one is even close.

Currently, the closest now (after Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols) is New York Mets infielder Robinson Cano.  Cano is fewer than 400 hits away from the mark, sitting at 2,631 upon last check.  Cano might have had a better chance, too, if not suspended twice for PEDs.

3,000 hits is as much a longevity milestone in baseball as it is a measuring stick of talent.  And, playing as many games as possible through a career is paramount to hitting such high marks.  At 39 years old, Robinson Cano may have run out of time.

There are only two other active players with over 2,000 hits:  Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and Reds first baseman Joey Votto.  That’s it.  No one else.  Zip.  Zero.  Nada.

Is Baseball’s Future In Jeopardy?

Probably not, but it’s going to be a long wait for the next player to threaten the legendary 3,000 hit mark.
