NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 1/6/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

With no Oilers or Leafs on this slate, we will have a fairly balanced slate with not too many polarizing superstars over $8500. There are some spots to exploit in this slate, which is where I come in; because to bonk a GPP hockey tournament, you have to find the home run spots at a relatively low ownership. Also, with as big of a slate as this is, I expect ownership to be low across the board; but, with that being said, teams like the Bruins and Avalanche will always be a little more popular.

I don’t want to write an entire piece about Patrick Kane and Alex Debrincat, but they will be in a good spot against the Coyotes, and they are heating up. They should be considered in your cash lineups as well.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

William Karlsson $4700DK/$4700FD

Jonathan Marchessault $7000DK/$7300FD

Reilly Smith $5000/$5500FD

Vegas at home will always appeal to me, but at these prices and with their current roles, I will officially buy. Pacioretty is typically a massive part of the Vegas offense, but he was placed on long term IR, which may make this line carry even more of a burden. The Karlsson line has been together since the franchise first started, and have never slowed down. They typically are very effective when they are all healthy, and Vegas in general loves to shoot the puck, as well as perform in front of their crazy fans. All signs are pointing to this line seeing heavy minutes and leading the Vegas charge. Since the Pacioretty injury, all 3 of these guys have been playing around 20 minutes a night. They are officially Vegas’ top line, all 3 of them also play on the primary powerplay unit, and Karlsson/Smith even kill penalties. They play a NYR team that is going out west, and typically plays a pace up matchup/style. The Rangers defense and goaltending is ok, but doesn’t scare me, and I will once again be hammering this late night correlation.

Correlated Snipe #2

Jack Hughes $5800DK/$7800FD

Jesper Bratt $5200DK/$6100FD

Tomas Tatar $2500DK/$4400FD

Damon Severson $3900DK/$4800FD

The Blue Jackets suck a hockey. Ok, I guess I will elaborate a little more; but before I get into that, I must say that Draftkings must have forgotten who the Devils are, because their pricing is very bad over there. Jack Hughes has been on fire since signing his big extension with the Devils. Tomas Tatar has jumped on the top line and top powerplay unit and is somehow min-priced on Draftkings, and has had a reputation as a Blue Jackets slayer. Jesper Bratt is simply good at hockey, and that is how I will end my analysis of the Devils top line. Not only are they the Devils top line, but Dailyfaceoff has them as 3 of the 5 players in their top powerplay unit, so they correlate across the board. With Dougie Hamilton out, Damon Severson has jumped on the top defensive pairing, and quarterbacks the top powerplay unit as well. Severson has been playing 25-30 minutes a night with Hamilton out. The Blue Jackets have a circus going on in net with injuries and covid, and their best defenseman by far, Zach Werenski is out with covid as well. Did I mention that the Devils are at home and playing the crappy Blue Jackets?

Hard Pass #1

The Boston Bruins

I don’t really have a true fade in such a gigantic slate of games, but the Bruins are typically popular (especially at home), and at hose prices I would simply rather have the expensive Avalanche guys. Not to mention that the Wild try to play a not so sexy simple game, and will for sure be being as responsible as they can be against the Pastrnak line. Again, I don’t have a true fade, but I will have very little exposure to the Bruins tonight.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder#1

Adam Boqvist $3700DK/$4800FD- Zach Werenski is out for the Blue Jackets, and Adam Boqvist should be quarterbacking their top powerplay unit, as well as playing on the top pair.

Grinder#2

Tyler Seguin $3600DK- A Draftkings only play here. We all know what Seguin use to be, and he will need to find his game more and more for the Stars to contend. Currently he is at least putting pucks on net.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
