Daytona International Speedway

The 2021 Truck Series and Xfinity Series seasons will get underway this week at Daytona International Speedway.  As always, when going to Daytona the first thing on my mind is avoiding the wrecks. Racing at Daytona involves running in tight packs with 20-30 drivers right on top of each other. This makes for an exciting but unpredictable race. As for the DFS slates, place differential is super important. You will hope to play drivers who can avoid the big wrecks and get as many drivers to the finish as possible. With a low number of laps and fast laps spread throughout the field, dominators are not overly important. At most, you will consider only one driver for lineups who can dominate.

Xfinity Series

Carnage is the name of the game for the Xfinity Series. It is a borderline guarantee for there to be 15 DNF in this race. This still baffles me considering there is such a large gap in equipment quality leading to smaller packs. The Xfinity Series races can be dominated by a driver or two due to a lack of top tier cars and threats to take the lead. Kaulig racing has used power in numbers to dominate these races over the last two years. Due to the big wrecks, many poor quality teams starting in the back offer big place differential opportunities. This leads to abnormally big scores and strange optimal lineups. You can leave salary on the table at Daytona and still make logical lineups. Overall, it is a game of luck this week. If you can get 6 drivers through to the end then your lineup will have a great shot at finishing well.

Lineup construction

I would recommend 2-3 top tier teams, usually stacks. Play JRM cars together or Kaulig etc. You can play two Kaulig and one JRM as well. You are trying to grab the three top finishers who will also score fast laps and lead a bunch. If the race’s dominators wreck late, which is very possible then they will lose all value which is why dominating isn’t as significant. You will then look to round out your lineup with the likes of JDM cars. Teams that will ride around, collect good place diff points and finish top 20 or 15. You can use the DFS Army Research Station to see who the best drivers are at this historically.

Truck Series

The Truck Series has a very similar track record as the Xfinity Series here at Daytona. We see roughly 13-15 DNF’s a race but have seen over 20 DNFs before as well. The Trucks are a little more unstable than the Xfinity Series cars and they also punch a larger hole in the air causing for a strong draft for the Truck behind. This results in a faster closing rate thus leading to many accidents. Roughly 30% of these races are ran under caution. We usually see big teams pull off the win but there is a much higher chance of a lower tier team breaking through. Last year, Jordan Anderson was about three feet from scoring a massive upset.

Lineup construction

If playing a dominator you will only need one. Just like the Xfinity race, the key to a winning DFS lineup will be finding six drivers who can stay out of trouble. The biggest difference is that nobody is safe in this race. The trucks stay together in a pack better and a larger portion of the field gets wrecked. It is harder to pinpoint safe plays or who the top picks for the win are. You don’t get the straight forward Kaulig or JRM plays. It is a very rough race in general.
