Phoenix Raceway

Championship weekend is here for both the Xfinity and Truck Series. Phoenix raceway is a flat, one-mile track with two completely different sets of corners on either end of the track. The races here see multiple long green flag runs with very few cautions overall. Speed is speed at Phoenix. Single lap speed translates well into long-run speed. The elite Xfinity teams absolutely dominate here. This showed massively with Brandon Jones dominating and winning here back in March. The truck series can be a bit more of a toss-up but we know who the drivers to beat are at this point of the year, especially on shorter, flat tracks. The track will apply the PJ1 traction compound this week in the upper grooves.

Weekend Preview

For the Xfinity Series this week we will look to play at least 2 dominators with a 3rd potential dominator if pricing allows. This track is hard to pass the leader and we often see a driver lead a large chunk of laps if they get out front. We see minimal carnage usually and only a few DNFs. Due to this, we will find that low tier drivers will have a limited upside for this race. Unless the Xfinity Series gives us one more ridiculous show of stupidity to close out the season. Very few obvious place differential plays for this race with most drivers starting roughly where their expected finishing position would be. This means you will have to get creative when making lineups. With the championship contenders starts 1st-4th we should favor them as potential dominators but based off the last race here in March, the Gibbs cars should be top threats for the win.

Favorite Play: Justin Allgaier

When picking my favorite plays of this week I am focusing on my favorite plays of the championship-contending drivers. For the Xfinity Series, it is fairly clear to me who should be the favorite for this race. Allgaier comes in having won twice since 2017 here and has led 50+ laps in 5 of the 7 races during that stretch. He has led a total of 366 laps while Cindric, Briscoe, and Haley have combined to lead 39. He is my favorite to win the race and the championship this week.

Race Preview

Short race here in the truck series at only 150 laps. For a 1 mile track that is very short. This lap total and the tough to pass nature of this track has me looking for exactly 2 dominators. Most likely you will want to play pairings of two championship-contending drivers. Grant Enfinger will start from the pole and should be a heavy favorite to dominate early. Creed, Moffitt, and Zane Smith all come out of the GMS team and should have similar speed. We have our smallest field since the series came back from covid. This means we will have less clear cut place differential plays and less upside for a lot of low tier/punt drivers. We will have 2-3 clearcut chalk place diff plays this week in Lyons, Lupton, and Chandler Smith who is back in the #51 for KBM. Phoenix has been rather tame for the Truck Series in recent years and we should play expecting that trend to continue.

Favorite Truck Series Play: Grant Enfinger

I think Grant is the guy to beat this week for the Championship. We saw his speed and aggression at Martinsville last week and I expect the exact same Grant this week. After his dominating win at Richmond, his Thorsport team set aside that truck specifically for this race at Phoenix. I expect that truck to have tons of speed at a track where he has scored back to back top 5 finishes.
