Daytona Road course

This week the Truck Series and Xfinity Series will both make their way to Daytona for the series’ first-ever races on the Daytona Road Course. The layout is used yearly for the 24 hours of Daytona sports car race. There will be one change from the normal layout for these races which is an added chicane to the front stretch in between turn four and pit lane.  This is being done to slow entry speeds into turn one. Overall, this road course isn’t very technical and should be relatively easy to adapt to for the drivers. That being said drivers with track time here racing sports cars will have an edge on the field. There will be no practice or qualifying for these races. It will be hard to predict this race and how teams/drivers will perform without seeing them run a single lap on the track. Using past series road course data will be the best place to start for these races.

Xfinity Series

NASCAR implemented a new starting lineup procedure for this week. Since this race follows the Road America Road Course race, there will not be many great place differential plays. For example, AJ Allmendinger, who started 33rd last week, will start 10th this week. This will make it harder to find the obvious plays and force us to get creative with lineup building. At only 52 total laps there again will be a low number of dominator points available this week. We should expect Cindric to dominate this race with AJ being his biggest threat. These two certainly can be on the winning lineup together as long as we get viable punt plays to pair with them. Once salaries come out we will get a clearer picture of how lineup building should go. Since this is our first race here, fuel window and pit strategy is unknown but I would assume teams will attempt to pit before each stage break. The biggest thing of interest for me will be tire wear and how significant it affects things on the final stage.

Favorite Xfinity Series Play: Earl Bamber

As an endurance racing fan, I was already a huge fan of Earl Bamber. He is a two-time 24 hours of Le Mans winner. He is a FIA World Endurance Champion and IMSA champion. Bamber will start 30th for this race and will be driving the #21 for RCR. The same #21 that Kaz Grala just finished 4th with at Road America. If Bamber were to have practice time with this car I would have him as my favorite for the win. He has already run this course twice this year in IMSA competition finishing 2nd in both races. I believe he will finish top 5 this week.

Truck Series

For the truck series race, I will lean heavily on recent series results at Mosport, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. This track has been the lone road course race for the Truck Series over the last few years. It will give us the best information to use. At only 44 laps there will not be a lot of dominator points for this race. I will be leaning heavily on place differential plays and top 5 finishers. There will be a ton of inexperience in this race. For example, Christian Eckes who starts 2nd has never raced on a road course in his life. There are quite a few new drivers in the field this week and it will be important to do lots of research to understand their viability for this race.

Favorite Truck Series Play: Kris Wright

Wright comes from a road racing background. He is going to offer good road racing experience and also has driven a couple of stock car races in the past. He will be driving the #24 for GMS racing. This is the same truck shared between a few different drivers in 2020, most notably Chase Elliott. This is a very good truck that can finish top 10 and Wright will be starting 26th. Great place differential potential.
