Atlanta

Both the Xfinity and Truck Series races will be ran on the same day this week. Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.5 mile high banked quad-oval with one of the best racing surfaces in all of auto racing. Due to the age of the racing surface we a significant amount of tire wear that leads to great racing throughout a green flag run. We will see lap times fall off between three & five seconds throughout a green flag run making long run speed incredibly important. The smoothest drivers who can take care of their tires the best will have a real advantage. Overall there are very few cautions in any race here at Atlanta as drivers are more concerned with racing the track than other drivers. This means low DNF rates and makes it easier for a single dominator.

Xfinity Series

Date: June 6th

Race: Saturday 4:30 pm ET.

Laps: 163 Stages: 40/80/163

Drivers: 37

Defending Champion: Christopher Bell

AVG. # of Cautions: 2.75 excluding stage breaks

AVG DNF’s: 6 per race

Race Preview

For years Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch tormented the field here giving us race after race of 1 dominator performances. Last year, Christopher Bell took over that role absolutely crushing the field. Based on this history we will be very focused on finding the one driver who has their car setup perfectly and can control this race. I would roll with an”at most two” dominator gameplan overall but with the understanding that we could see one driver leading 90% of the laps. Place differential plays, as a result, will be crucial. There are a lot of young drivers in the field this year who have very little understanding of how significant tire fall off will be. We see very few cautions here. Long run speed is EVERYTHING. The DFS Army Research Station will give you the best information available to help determine who the best plays are.

Race Procedure

Pit selection:

  • Order based on finishing position from the May 30 race at Bristol, followed by new entries in order of points.

Starting lineup:

  • Positions 1 -12: The first 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up Eligibility will be assigned starting positions 1st – 12th using a random draw.
  • Positions 12 – 24: The next 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up eligibility will be assigned starting positions 12th- 24th using a random draw.
  • Starting positions 25 – 36: The next 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up eligibility will be assigned starting positions 25th -36th using a random draw.
  • Any vehicles that are eligible for the Event in position 37th – 40th will be assigned starting positions based on their order of eligibility.

Competition Caution:

We should expect an early competition caution around lap 15-20. Tire wear is high so NASCAR will want to give teams a chance to look at everything fairly early into the first run.

Favorite Top Tier Play: Chase Briscoe

The reasoning is similar to Darlington earlier this year. Briscoe is now the only driver at SHR in the Xfinity Series so he has the sole focus and best of the equipment. Custer finished 2nd here in 2019. Also, and most importantly, Briscoe’s crew chief Richard Boswell built his setup notebook while working with Kevin Harvick who is the absolute best here at Atlanta. I believe Briscoe will be the biggest threat for the win.

Truck Series

Quick Facts

Date: June 6th

Race: Saturday 1:00 pm ET.

Laps: 130 Stages: 40/80/130

Drivers: 40

Defending Champion: Kyle Busch

AVG. # of Cautions: 4 excluding stage breaks

AVG DNF’s: 4.5 per race

Race Preview

We should expect Kyle Busch to be the main lone dominator for this race. Outside of KB, we will look for a strong #2 who can lead some laps and get some fast laps while finishing up front.  Next up will be finding drivers with position upside starting outside the top 10. In each of the past five races, we have seen 4-5 drivers start 11th-25th finish inside the top 10. Lots of position upside to be had. Obviously, with no practice or qualifying, we will have to make our best guess based on past track history. Be sure to check out the Research Station for all the Atlanta info. We have a much deeper field than normal and considering we have few cautions here, the punt plays will have very limited upside. I will be focusing on drivers with real speed who can finish top 15.

Favorite Truck Series Play: Brett Moffitt (Besides the obvious Kyle Busch play)

Won here in 2018 and finished 4th last season. Moffitt also had an incredible 8th place finish in the Cup Series here back during the high HP days when a top 10 was hard earned. He did this in the #55 for MWR which was a struggling organization at the time. He is fantastic at this track and if we get any break on his salary I would recommend getting a lot of Brett Moffitt.
