Talladega SuperSpeedway

Talladega is a massive 2.66-mile SuperSpeedway race track wide enough to run 4 and 5 wide.  For those unfamiliar with Superspeedway tracks, the racing is done in tight packs with the majority of contenders running super close together. The cars have the ability to run wide open at a Superspeedway. Since there is no off-throttle time needed the cars are relatively equal in terms of speed. This creates the ability for a draft to come into play. The draft reduces drag on a car running behind another car thus allowing it to go faster. The draft is what keeps all the cars in a tight pack. One huge consequence of the pack racing is large wrecks involving multiple cars. This means a much higher chance of a driver wrecking. In Xfinity, we still see a separation between the bigger teams who will spend the majority of the race racing up front for the lead and the lower end teams who tend to ride around off the pace and out of the way to avoid getting involved in the big accidents.

The Big One

At superspeedway tracks like Talladega, large wrecks are a common occurrence. These large wrecks are known as “The Big One”. Due to the fact that teams run in tight packs, one mistake that causes an accident often collects numerous drivers. Because of this, we play these races slightly different than normal. We lean towards playing the back of the pack starters with safer floors and high place differential upsides. You will mix in these plays with top tier drivers who can finish top 5 or win. We see numerous top drivers with negative scores that kill lineups. While it is a guessing game when it comes to who will wreck, you can make smart, educated decisions to have a successful race for DFS.

DFS Preview

We will play this race rather differently than most weeks. We will basically ignore “how many dominators” while focusing on place differential opportunities. The most laps any driver has led in the last six Talladega races is 40. Obviously, if the driver who leads 40 laps also wins they would be one of the highest scorers of the day but they can also be outscored by drivers coming from the back. Fast laps will be spread throughout the field due to the draft. Top teams always win here and I would recommend looking at team stacks when trying to build lineups. JRM, Gibbs, and Kaulig will see lots of attention but RSS Racing will be a sneaky good play. Everyone will be playable this week however, the higher they qualify the more risk will come with a driver. We will lean heavily on past results on this track style utilizing the Research Station and some killer VIP content through coach Taco.

Favorite Top Tier Play: AJ Allmendinger

AJ is going to start deep in the field but will be driving one of the best cars and will be a big threat for the win. The last time Kaulig had 3 cars in a SuperSpeedway race, they finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at Daytona last summer. AJ was the third place finisher in that race but was later DQ’d. AJ is going to get a lot of love for this race and for good reason. His place differential upside is going to surpass and dom points a driver may collect and if he can score a top 5 then he will likely be on the optimal lineup.

Favorite Value Play: Jeff Green

Over the last two years with RSS Racing, Jeff Green has been a start and park driver for nearly every single race. The rare exception to this has been the superspeedway races. In his time there he has finishes of 11th, 13th, 23rd, 7th, and 7th. He will start in the very back of the field and will likely be one of the very lowest priced drivers. He will offer great place differential upside, pricing, and likely lower than he should ownership.
