Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article, where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares and Fanduel and Draftkings for Today’s NBA slate.

So what is a Free Square exactly? In DFS we define the Free Square as a player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate.

This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Often times, this will be a low-cost player who is thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot. Each slate we will take a look at three or four players which represent great value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square

Shabazz Napier $5,800 / $4,800

The T’Wolves are dealing with a ton of injuries today and that is going to force their bench players into the starting lineup. Shabazz Napier is my favorite of the bunch, even though he may not be the cheepest. Draftkings has priced him up quickly and he’s $5,800 on that site, where Fanduel is lagging behind as usual and have him priced at just $4,800. He’s coming off a big game vs the Nets where he played 34 minutes and scored 41 fantasy points. The Matchup he has vs the Bucks is not ideal but the minutes he will play should allow him to reach and exceed value in this one. I’ll have plenty of exposure on both sites given the injury situation for the Wolves.

Other T’Wolves

Gorgui Dieng will be starting again at Center for Karl Anthony Towns. He’s priced up now over 6k on both sites but he just keeps producing. He’s not a value option but he’s fully in play on this small 3 game slate. If you’re looking for value, you’re going to want to target Kelan Martin and Jarrett Culver who should both get plenty of run tonight with Andrew Wiggins out.

The NBA Research Station is my #1 source for research every single day and is one of the VIP Only tools our members have access to daily. The info in the NBA ReSearch Station includes today’s 📊 DFS Army Projection, Adjusted DVP matchups and much more. This tool will cut your daily research time in half.

Carmelo Anthony $5,900 / $5,300

Melo has played 36, 33, 37 and 37 minutes in his last 4 games. Only one of those games would be a “great” DFS Game where he scored 37 fantasy points against the Pelicans. In the other 3 games he scored 19, 22 and 20 fantasy points. Tonight he gets a great matchup vs the Knicks and it’s his 1st game back in Madison Square Garden since 2017. I’m expecting Melo to put on a show (or at least try to) on New Years Day in the Garden.

Bring it Back

Elf Payton should get tons of run tonight with Dennis Smith Jr and Damian Dotson hobbled (both questionable). He’s priced reasonably at 6.1k on DK and 5.9k on FD tonight. We have him projected to be much higher owned on Fanduel, given the position requirements of the site and his price. I expect him to have a solid game here with the extra opportunities he’ll have.

Julius Randle is another Knick that I have a lot of interest in. He’s way too cheap on Fanduel at only 7.5k and he’s gone over 50 fantasy points in 2 of his last 3 games. As I mentioned above the Knicks are dealing with some injuries so the majority of this Offense should run through Randle.
