Race Notes

The Xfinity Series is running its second road course race in as many weeks at the series heads to Mid Ohio. Mid Ohio runs 2.258 miles in length and offers 13 corners. Due to the size of the track there are very few laps but this remains one of the longest races in terms of actual race time. We usually see a lot of individual incidents that don’t bring out a caution plus a few bigger issues that does create full course cautions. Staying clean and avoiding incidents is a massive part of this race especially on restarts. Strategy will play a fairly significant part in terms of shaking up the running order during the stages much like it did last year. Long run speed is very important here with a lot of tire fall off. Last years race was won by Justin Allgaier taking tires and having better grip late than race dominator Austin Cindric.  The DFS Army Research Station is the best place to get all the practice and track history info for each driver so make sure to check it out.

Lineup Building

Dominator / Top Tier

For this race we can expect only one true dominator. There is a chance that two drivers can split the dom points making them both important for the optimal lineup. This has not been the case in recent years however. With roughly 45 dom points available the separation will be much smaller than normal and overall place differential could be every bit as important. AJ allmendinger will come into the weekend as the favorite to dominate with Austin Cindric a close second. Cindric dominated this race last year before ending up 2nd and is also coming off a win last week at Watkins Glen. There are some clear cut elite plays this week and a lot of the top tier drivers will struggle to match them this week.

Mid Tier

Draftkings gave us couple elite plays in the mid tier this week. Jack Hawksworth is driving the #18 for Joe Gibbs at $8100 and Regan Smith driving the #8 comes in at $8200. Both are fantastic plays and will be massively owned. Finding the drivers with the best place differential is going to be very important this week and can be a bit of a guessing game in general. Drivers rarely finish a lap down due to the short stages and multiple cautions throughout. Because of this and the many late race incidents drivers who simply stay on track end up scoring much better finishes than what would be expected. Don’t be afraid to mix things up as the chalk drivers can be taken out in situations not of their doing. An example of this happened last year when Justin Marks, who was an elite obvious play ended up wrecking late going from well inside the top 10 to finishing 22nd.

Low Tier/Punts

Because of the ultra high DNF rate as well as the late race incidents many players in this group can be of great value. Many of these drivers do their best to stay out of trouble which pays dividends late. Great examples of this from last year are Tommy Joe Martins going from 30th to 19th and David Starr going from 32nd to 21st. Both these drivers end up scoring really well. Obviously avoiding the start and parks is crucial as will be getting knowledge on some of the sneaky good plays who can offer elite gpp upside. For this info check out the VIP article called The Inside Line: Xfinity Series for this weekends race.
