Race Info

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series makes its way to Michigan for the second time in 2019. Earlier this year we saw an absolutely dominating performance by Joey Logano in what was a rather dull follow the leader type race. Due to this NASCAR has applied the PJ1 traction compound in the upper part of the track. The hope of this is for it to create more side by side racing even if just on restarts. While Michigan is one of the widest tracks the low horsepower, high aero package has relegated this race to wide open single groove racing. Track position will be unbelievably important. Practice times especially long run speed is important as we will see very little in terms of crashes or natural cautions.

Lineup Building

Dominator / Top Tier

Based off the previous race this year here at Michigan you would say only one dominator would be needed. There is certainly a possibility of that happening again. I would recommend still playing lineups with two dominators but it does seem unlikely that more than that will be needed. Brad Keselowski won the pole for the race with and incredible lap time and appears to be a strong favorite to do what his teammate Logano did back in June. Another big favorite will be Kevin Harvick who had the fastest car speed wise the entire weekend in June including during the race and qualified second. Kyle Busch starting 22nd is going to offer some fantastic place differential and could be a strong play to pair with a lone dominator.

Mid Tier

As normal any driver who offers great place differential is important. This race it will be a long difficult process for drivers to make their way forward with most positions gained likely coming from strategy and on pit road. Also, drivers who are elite on restarts are going to be vitally important. Drivers like Newman and Buescher are both fantastic on restarts and are aggressive enough to get positions when others can’t. Hemric and Dillon both had their qualifying times disallowed and will be scored from the back. This will make both drivers chalk plays but they obviously carry huge upside.

Low Tier/Punts

Due to the track length and the cars running wide open, these lower end teams have a better chance to stay on the lead lap. If they can manage this they have a shot at a solid finish with a strong last stage of the race. Back in June Corey Lajoie Started 32nd but ended up 23rd. This type of scenario is certainly possible. Ty Dillon ended up 22nd and Matt Tifft 24th. With the right place diff any driver finishing in this range can definitely present good value at a low cost.

I will be giving my Fanduel Top Plays in a VIP article prior to the race.

I will also answer any questions you may have in the VIP Slack!
