Schnarr’s Super Picks DFS PGA Preview – 3M Open

Every week on the PGA Tour a new course means a new set of challenges. This article will examine the course being played and give specific insight on some keys for the week that other previews may be overlooking. This article will also breakdown players who stand out on both FanDuel and DraftKings for Cash Game and GPP formats. Finally, I will be reviewing my picks from before and going into a deeper dive on my Cash Game team in an attempt to better my own process while hopefully helping you with yours. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr.

Congrats to multiple DFS Army members aznbeerman on the great week!

Review from last week

Due to travel for work I did not play DFS for the Rocket Mortgage Classic and I do not think is much use going through my picks for the Travellers Championship.

Course Preview

In this section I will point out a few things that I find interesting about the course. If you’re a member at the Army you also have Josh’s article for more extensive reasoning on what the key stats are and our Domination Station showing what stats have been the most important historically.

  • We have only seen TPC Twin Cities on the Senior Tour and I would be lying if I said I had any background this week prior to any research I have done today.
  • The par 71 measures at 7,481 yards and plays roughly 300 yards longer than what has been seen at past events for the Senior Tour.
  • Most of this length is through longer par threes (three over 200 yards) and three par fives all measuring over 590 yards. There are also two longer Par 4’s at 501 and 502 yards.
  • From all accounts at the senior tour, this is an event where we should see very low scores. Despite the relative length likely making us see a few less birdies on the par 3’s/5’s the course itself seems to be setup for scorers to go low.
  • Off of the tee, from all I am seeing this seems to be an event where bombers have plenty of chances to take advantage of their distance.
  • Although water seems to be in play across multiple holes which may force players to club down on occasion, for the most part players are greeted with wide fairways and relatively little interference off of the tee
  • Approaching the green, we get some of the largest greens on tour which should somewhat mitigate the number of bogeys we see this week

Overall, as more comes out throughout the week from a variety of sources we should be able to get a better understanding of what can lead to success at this event. As of now, I am likely bumping distance off of the tee and shots gained: approach for the week while worrying less about shots gained: around the green and driving accuracy.

 Interesting Plays

In this section I will discuss plays that I like/dislike and guys that I find interesting for the week. Because this article comes out on a Monday this list can change, anyone I change my mind on will be discussed later in the week in our PGA coaching channel

$11k and up (Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama)

Two obvious studs headlining the filed as Brooks is back after a week off and Hideki continues his stretch of high end finishes. Between Brooks subpar performance at the Travellers and DJ’s missed cut last week we have seen recently how even these top tier players in weaker fields can have an off week. With that said both players have the game to dominate at this track and I like both this week but this is a good reminder that even the top tier players can disappoint. Personally, upon first look I imagine I will have more of Brooks solely based on expecting lower ownership compared to Hideki. With that said Matsuyama is also I player I have been on week in and week out and I will likely also try to be a little above the field average depending on where we are projecting final ownership to end up. As always the final decision will be posted in my final notes.

$10k and up (Jason Day, Bryson Dechambeau, Patrick Reed,

In this tier we see three players who all appear to be trending in the right direction based on there last few results. Upon first look my favourite of the three is Bryson Dechambeau as I think his game is best suited for the course out of all three of these players. I will wait for the Research Station to distinguish, and will give a bit more details in my final notes but my current thought is to be overweight on Dechambeau and potentially have as a core piece well likely being underweight on Day and Reed.

$9k and up (Rory Sabbatini, Joaquin Niemann, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, Sungjae Im)

We have a really interesting tier here with three tour rookies all playing great golf, Rory Sabbatini playing his best golf in many years and Tony Finau on a three tournament stretch of missed cuts. Because of recent performance I expect Finau is likely the lowest owned, and if that is true he is a player I do not mind being a little over the filed on at a course that he can dominate with his game. This tier for me in GPP’s will be largely based on ownership, with four guys all playing great golf right now it’s tough to definitively say any of them are the superior play – ownership will be the key for me.

Kevin Na – DK: $8600

Na is interesting to me because of recent performance – you rarely see a MC, Win, MC of recent results but here we are.   Back at an easier venue I could see Na doing well, as his missed cuts are on tougher tracks (Pebble Beach and Bethpage Black) and his track record prior to this stretch was pretty solid. If the missed cuts can keep ownership down I am all for taking a shot on a recent winner.

Nate Lashley – DK: $8300

Although I was away and unable to play DFS Golf last week I was able to catch all of the action Sunday and it sure was great watching Lashley win his first event on tour. Because of the story, I could see Lashley garnering additional ownership this week. Depending on ownership, I think Lashley will potentially be a fade or a guy I am heavily underweight on as we know just how tough it is to bring it week in and week out on this tour.

Cameron Champ – DK: $7500

We saw 2 terrific and 2 horrific rounds out of Champ this week. Aside from these two rounds, Champ has been very bad by PGA Tour standards after an impressive swing season. I think the low scores on Thursday/Friday will entice a few people onto Champ this week – and although I think this is actually a great course fit for his game I think he still has to be a fade until we can see similar consistency as we did within the fall season.

Nick Taylor – DK: $7200

The Canadian looked solid last week on route to his T35 performance. I think out of Taylor we have seen a lack high end finishes to justify him in GPP’s – however, I do think at this price Taylor is a potential low priced option for cash games for me.

 Cash Game Review

I will end each article going over my double-up cash game line-up for the week, breaking down my plays and reflecting for the following week

The Team (12-9) – Current Streak 1 loss

A loss at the Travellers Championship brings the total record to 12 and 9 in double ups for the year.

Paul Casey – T5

Tommy Fleetwood – T13

Emiliano Grillo – T60

Byeong Hun An – MC

Adam Hadwin – MC

Russell Knox – T21

The team started off great with solid performaces from Paul Casey and Adam Hadwin but was unable to recover from two key missed cuts and my line-up ultimately ended up missing the money line by 13.5 fantasy points. This was another week where I felt pretty confident on a few guys to lock in a build around. I started with Knox, Casey and Grillo as essential locks for me based on the value I felt they provided based on their price. The majority agreed as the three saw ownership levels of 50.7%, 69.1% and 79% respectively in the double up contest I was apart off. From there I had a few different lineup possibilities, but ultimately found myself plugging in Fleetwood and Hadwin, leaving just enough to also rose An for the week. This was the misstep from a result standpoint as those two missed cuts were the reason my team did not cash for the week.
