Schnarr’s Super Picks DFS PGA Preview – RBC Canadian Open

Every week on the PGA Tour a new course means a new set of challenges. This article will examine the course being played and give specific insight on some keys for the week that other previews may be overlooking. This article will also breakdown players who stand out on both FanDuel and DraftKings for Cash Game and GPP formats. Finally, I will be reviewing my picks from before and going into a deeper dive on my Cash Game team in an attempt to better my own process while hopefully helping you with yours. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr.

Congrats to DFSArmy member AnyGivenDay on his GPP win this week!

Review from last week

$10K and up (Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay)

In order I played Partick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Tiger Woods. I wrote up in my member notes how Cantlay was my favourite play ,which is great for me as Cantlay finally broke through for his second PGA win in what was beginning to feel inevitable with how he has been playing. Rory was my second favourite which didn’t work out well for me, I was right around field average ownership with 20% in GPP. Among the next group I played very little of all three, but had Rose the most. Aside from Rory I really can’t complain as I was overweight on the eventual winner and highest performance, overweight on Rose’s 6.08% average and slightly underweight on Rickie and Tiger.

$9K and up (Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, Justin ThomasP, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele)

Hideki was my man out of this tier, which once again worked out great as he has the highest performance at one of the cheapest prices. I did not anticipate quite as much ownership however and was only slightly overweight with 33% ownership compared to 28.16% average. Finau and JT were my next 2 favourites, which obviously is not ideal – I was slightly overweight on Finau at 24% ownership, but underweight with JT with only 18% as I did not anticipate the 28.76% average. I was slightly above on Spieth, under on Kuchar and his tournament high 34.89% ownership and right around the field on Day and Schauffele.

$8K and up (Bryson Dechambeau, Gary Woodland, Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Rory Sabbatini, Jason Kokrak, Phil Mickelson, Marc Leishman)

I wrote how this group was more than likely going to be one I am underweight on as a whole in an effort to get more guys within the $9k range. That was partially true aside from 2 exceptions that became core players for me as the week went on; Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson. This worked out great for me as Stenson was right in the middle of the pack for fantasy points per $ within this group and Scott had an incredible week with the second best fantasy performance for the entire tournament.

Peter Uihlein – DK: $7200

This pick certainly did not work out.

Russell Knox – DK: $7100

Knox was solid for the price with a T27 finish.

Adam Hadwin – DK: $7100

Hadwin gave me a cash game scare, but ultimately pulled through to the weekend where he hung around for a T52.

Joel Dahmen – DK: $7000

Made the cut but didn’t really do much with it and ended T68 for the week.

Overall a good week for me in both GPP and cash games that could have been a great week if a few more of these $7k and under guys worked out for me. On to the next

Course Preview

In this section I will point out a few things that I find interesting about the course. If you’re a member at the Army you also have Josh’s article for more extensive reasoning on what the key stats are and our Domination Station showing what stats have been the most important historically.

  • Hamilton Golf and Country Club is a par 70 that will, according to reports, play right around 7000 yards.
  • The course has hosted the Canadian Open on three occasions and if you look at the leaderboard in past events a lot of guys who are known for irons pop off here
  • As the course is right around me I have been lucky enough to play it a few years back, I doubt my play through from the white tee’s is much help, but I do think it helps to understand why certain players have had success here.
  • First and foremost from PGA standards this course is incredibly short, but many holes force your hand and I think driver will be out of play a lot of the time for these guys.
  • The greens were the most sloped of anything I have played in my life and I from watching golf quite regularly look more sloped than what we see most weeks. If you aren’t hitting it pin high or giving yourself an uphill putt I think you can get into trouble and take away most of your birdie chances – I would imagine for this reason SG: Approach is that much more of a premium this week as you really need to maximize your chances and a few feet here or there can make a big difference over the course of the tournament.

 Interesting Plays

In this section I will discuss plays that I like/dislike and guys that I find interesting for the week. Because this article comes out on a Monday this list can change, anyone I change my mind on will be discussed later in the week in our PGA coaching channel

$11k and up (Rory McIlory, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson)

Up top we have three guys that likely don’t fit the narrative for this event, but can obviously win at each and every course week in and week out. Yes all three guys are long off of the tee which is somewhat mitigated here, however, all three guys are also world class approaching the green. It’s tough to fade DJ or Brooks with recent performance and an off week from McIlroy with plenty of options will likely suppress his ownership quite a bit. I like all three for obvious reasons and will post more in my final notes on where I end up.

$9K and up (Brandt Snedeker, Henrik Stenson, Scott Piercy, Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar)

This is a real interesting group with how things turned out last week. Obviously JT and Kuchar are the top two but both just missed the cut last week. You also have a former winner in Piercy, and three guys who line up really well for this event in Snedeker, Stenson and Simpson. I think ownership will dictate a lot of my decisions in this group – however, on first look my favourites are likely Henrik Stenson and Webb Simpson but I will finalize in my notes on Wednesday.

Jim Furyk – DK: $8800

Former winner at this course with two straight solid apprearances is in a really interesting spot because of his price. On my first look through I thought it’s really tough to get behind Furyk at this price, but if that’s the sentiment everyone has then you can get a former winner who is having a good year at a real low ownership #. I will wait and see what DFSUpNorth has to say about ownership.

Adam Hadwin – DK: $8300

Loved Hadwin at low $7k, not sure I can get behind at mid $8’s.

Sungjae Im – DK: $7900

Finally got myself more or less off of Sungjae last week and will be doing the same until we see some form from him again.

Joaquin Niemann/Alex Noren – DK: $7700

Writing these two together because of the same price and similar sentiment for both. I think we are starting to see both round into form after awful stretches – I like both as GPP options this week unless our Research Station tells me I am completely off base here.

 Cash Game Review

I will end each article going over my double-up cash game line-up for the week, breaking down my plays and reflecting for the following week

The Team (10-8) – Current Streak 1 win/1 loss

I ended up with two teams this week as I liked quite a few guys and I felt I minimized my risk by using the same core and switching out a few guys

Team #1 win

Patrick Cantlay – Win

Adam Scott – 2nd

Matt Kuchar – MC

Rafa Cabrera Bello – T41

Russell Knox – T27

Adam Hadwin – T52

Team #2 Loss

Matt Kuchar – MC

Tony Finau – MC

Adam Scott – T2

Emiliano Grillo – T9

Russell Knox – T27

Adam Hadwin – T52

Team 1 was comfortably in the money while team 2 narrowly missed the cash line. I had Grillo as a core piece I really wanted but was unable to find a way to comfortably fit him with the salries of Cantlay/Kuchar/Scott and ended up being fine with the construction to not include him on team #1. Other than that, Knox and Hadwin were guys I ideally wanted (Knox was a lock for me more or less and Hadwin wasn’t far behind). RCB has not been his usual self as of late but was still making cuts where I felt comfortable with him.
