Talladega marks the second of three Superspeedway races for the Xfinity Series in 2019. For those unfamiliar with Superspeedway tracks the racing is done in tight packs with the majority of contenders running super close together. The cars have the ability to run wide open at a Superspeedway. Since there is no off throttle time needed the cars are relatively equal in terms of speed. This creates the ability for a draft to come into play. Drafting is a manipulation of the air in order to make the car go faster. The draft is what keeps all the cars in a tight pack. One huge consequence of the pack racing are large wrecks involving multiple cars. This means a much higher chance of a driver wrecking. In Xfinity, we still see a separation between the bigger teams who will spend the majority of the race racing up front for the lead and the lower end teams who tend to ride around off the pace and out of the way to avoid getting involved in the big accidents. Practice is relatively unimportant and most knowledge should be based on past race performances of a driver

Lineup Building

Dominator / Top Tier

In general picking a dominator really isn’t important for this week. The most laps any driver has led in the last 5 years is 40. Obviously if the driver who leads 40 laps also wins they would be one of the highest scorers of the day but they can also be out scored by drivers coming from the back. An example of this was Kaz Grala going from 38th to 5th at Daytona last July. In general finding drivers who have top 5 finishing ability and some position upside will be important. I tend to look for drivers who have shown the ability to avoid the big wrecks and get good finishes at a higher percentage. Keep in mind that the large wrecks take out a lot of high profiled drivers essentially eliminating lineups with negative scores. Also, fast laps are spread throughout the pack with the driver leading not claiming these points.

Mid to Low Tier

Everyone in this area will be playable this week. The higher they qualify the more risk will come with them. Any driver that offers huge upside is someone to target as their ability to finish top 10/15 is much better this week. Drivers like Justin Haley and Annett who will likely be in this group are playable but will come with much more risk than someone like Ryan Seig who usually rides outside the big pack and stays out of trouble. Position upside is of course a premium. Drivers on the lower end tend to be much safer plays and offer upside that sees them scoring in the 35-50 point range.

Punts

All drivers are playable this week including punts. Some of these drivers will offer more upside than others but all will most likely stay out of trouble and score well for your lineup. Last year Jeff Green started 35th and finished 13th. This is not abnormal here. Don’t be afraid to take chances in this group as they could end up as some of the highest scorers on the slate with the right position upside
