Forslund’s Full Mount – UFC 235 DFS MMA Cash Game Winning Picks Advice For Draftkings – Mar 1

Welcome back everyone to another Saturday night of MMA action.  We are graced this time with a solid 12 fight card that features not just 1 but, 2 Championship matches.  I am really looking forward to this card and Draftkings has rolled out some very solid contests in tournaments for us to attack.  For you 1st time readers, welcome and I hope you enjoy the article.  For all you regular readers, you will notice a change.  Moving forward I am  going to gear this article for cash games.  If you want my full thoughts on the entire card, you can find them in our MMA coaches notes Yes, I know everyone wants to win that big tournament win!  But a major point we make here at DFS Army is proper bankroll management.  A major part of that is, of course, cash games.  It may not be the sexiest way to build your bankroll but, over time it can be the most consistent.  I would love to hear any feedback on this new format, and I look forward to helping everyone learn the art of creating a solid cash game lineup.

We have been on a huge run in all sports at DFS Army!  We have kicked off the new NASCAR season right where we left off last season!  To go along with that and of course our phenomenal NBA content we have NHL.  You name the sport we cover it!  If you want to join in on the winning use promo code “FORSLUND” to save 20% on your membership.

As always have some fun in tournaments this week.  Just remember the Golden Rule!  While chasing after the big payout is enticing always remember bankroll management.  I am a firm believer in the 80-20 rule.  Which is 80% of your allocated bankroll for the night in cash games and 20% in tournaments.  Remember to take advantage of our Research Station and Domination Station.  Plus check out the podcast, and follow me on Twitter (@MMACashAssassin) for the latest MMA and DFS Army news!

For those of you new to MMA here is a breakdown of the scoring used on Draftkings.

MMA Cash Game Basics for DFS

In cash games, unlike tournaments, we are trying to build a solid floor with our lineups.  Many times that may mean using a fighter with great odds to win a match or taking someone who is severely mispriced in a solid spot.  Cash games are often times card dependent.  For example, if a fighter is expected to be chalky in cash games and I feel they are in a good spot I have no problem eating the chalk and just rostering him.  After all, he’s chalky for a solid reason.  One major difference between cash and tournament play is getting past your aversion to play the chalk.  Often times, the chalk makes a lot of sense.  (I’m going to use the word “chalk” a lot, if new, chalk is slang for “popular player.”)  If, you ever have any questions pertaining to cash games feel free to reach out to me on Twitter or if you are a VIP shoot me a dm.

DFS MMA UFC 235  Cash Core Plays

Jon Jones (-800) 9.6k

Jones is the current Light Heavyweight Champion and is undefeated in his UFC career.  Many consider him to be one of if not the best fighters in UFC history.  He is a solid all-around fighter.  Jones is a solid striker and lands at a solid rate of 4.43 Significant Strikes (SS’s) per minute.  He has the ability to hurt his opponents with his hands, elbows, and leg kicks.  Not only can he do damage on the feet but, he is dangerous on the ground as well.  He has solid take-downs (TD’s) which, he averages 2.09 per fight.  Jones has the advantage wherever this fight takes place.  His opponent, Anthony Smith is a solid striker in his own right but, he doesn’t land at as high of a rate as Jones does.

Jones is the most expensive fighter on the entire slate.  The price is well warranted though, and I think he will be popular in cash games.  This is chalk I am eating in cash.   He has the best implied odds to win (-800) and has great odds to win Inside The Distance (ITD) at (-390).  So, not only does he have a solid floor but, he also has upside as well.  It is also worth noting that he is the best value play on the entire slate when looking at our DFS Army exclusive Research Station.  When constructing my cash lineup Jones is one of the 1st fighters I am comfortable locking into my lineup.

Zabit Magomedsharipov (-230) 8.9k

In cash games, whenever possible I try and target grappling heavy fighters that tend to have the ability to do so in their fights.  That’s exactly what we have here with Zabit.  Through 4 UFC fights he averages 7.24 TD”s per fight.  Takedowns are gold on Draftkings!  Each TD is worth 5 Draftkings points plus, throw in some advances and some striking in there and you have 100+ point upside.  I am not even sure how popular he will be in cash games mainly because his opponent Jeremy Stephens typically puts up solid scores when he wins. Vegas is leaning on this fight going to decision (-130) and the winner being Zabit (+141 to win via decision) in this scenario The only thing Zabit needs to worry about in this match-up is the power Stephens possesses in his hands.  I find it very, hard to ignore the safety Zabit brings through his TD’s and I like his chances to  get the win here.  I think he is fairly priced and could easily 10x his salary in a win.

Ben Askren (-300) 9k

For casual MMA fans, Askren isn’t a household name.  He is making his UFC debut after being traded last year.  We can take advantage of this because just going off the stats per draftkings he doesn’t have any.  Here is what I can tell you about him to convince you he is a solid cash game play. He is a former US Olympic wrestler.  From the tape I have watched of him in previous fights, he is very grappling-heavy based.  He is going to shoot for the TD and once he gets his opponent to the mat he either submits them or they are down there the remainder of the round.  I believe the UFC is setting Askren up for a solid debut and are giving him an opponent that will let him display his talents.  Don’t be scared off at all by the fact Vegas expects this fight to go to decision (-240).  I think that just means more potential scoring for Askren and more points for those that roster him in their cash lineups.

Diego Sanchez (+200) 7.1k

Obviously, in any lineup it’s not possible to roster only favorites in our lineups.  For that reason, you need to take some calculated risks on 1 or 2 underdogs in your lineup depending on your overall roster construction.  May I point you in the direction of Sanchez as a solid cash punt (for the new, a “punt” is a low priced option that should do ok for us, but really frees up salary to go after bigger stars).  His opponent Mickey Gall is 4-1 in the UFC which, sounds pretty good at first.  Then take a look at who he has faced.  One of them being former WWE talent CM Punk.  Color me not impressed.  Sanchez is by far the more experienced fighter here.  Not to mention Sanchez has never been submitted in his career and that’s Galls path to victory.  Gall has never knocked out anyone in his career and that’s been Sanchez’s weakness as of late.  It doesn’t hurt either that Vegas leans on this fight going to decision.  All paths point to either a victory or a decision loss in my opinion.  Both are outcomes I can live with in my cash lineup at his 7.1k salary.
