Covering ALL the Bases: MLB DFS Advice for Fanduel and Draftkings

Welcome back to the Saturday edition of “Covering All the Bases,” which should be where you start your research for any weekend MLB DFS slate.  I’m ready to break down tonight’s 8-game main slate.  Whether you are playing on Fanduel and Draftkings, I’ve got some thoughts to get your lineup-building process started. I’m not going to include the early slate in today’s article and I would recommend focusing on the bigger slates in MLB for the remainder of the season.  Let’s start where always start…pitching.

Pitchers

This is easy, play German Marquez in cash and GPP. Moving on to the bats…

Just kidding, but seriously if you’ve been reading my articles or following me on twitter you should know by now that I have been on Marquez for the last two months and have been blown away by how under-owned he is on nearly every slate. Well, he will be chalk today as he gets to face the weak-hitting Giants on the road where DFS players feel better about using a Colorado pitcher, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use him.  He’s a cash game lock for me (if you’re still playing cash games) and I’ll have him in nearly every GPP lineup as well.

The obvious ownership pivot to me here is Madison Bumgarner in the same game. The Rockies were shutout last night by Chris Stratton, who is far from an elite pitcher. The last time Mad-Bum faced the Rockies at home he went 7 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts.  He’s awfully cheap on FD at 8200, a full 2400 less than Marquez.

I suppose Reynaldo Lopez and Andrew Heaney are in play tonight as well, as they are both coming off big performances and have exploitable matchups, but I’m not sure I’m chasing either of them. I see the strikeout upside with both, but just remember that they are also very volatile pitchers who can give up some long balls any given night.

Congrats to Army VIP David aka “Dradt8386” on another massive takedown on FD last night! Even if NFL has taken over the majority of the DFS world, there’s still plenty of money to be made in MLB. It doesn’t matter which sports you play, you get ALL SPORTS for ONE PRICE at DFS ARMY!

Bats

My two favorite stacks tonight are not teams that many DFS players are used to stacking, so maybe we can use that to our advantage.

The Kansas City Royals continue to be an improved offense late in the year and have a nice matchup with Twins rookie right-hander Chase De Jong tonight. Ryan O’Hearn, Adalberto Mondesi, Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Jorge Bonifacio, and Whit Merrifield (who is stealing bases like crazy lately) are all in play for me tonight as I will be building multiple Royals stacks.

The San Diego Padres are going to be firmly in play for me tonight as they face Rangers rookie Ariel Jurado, who might be the worst pitcher on the entire slate. Jurado brings his 7 ERA and 1.7 WHIP into San Diego tonight.  The Padres bats are pretty affordable and should allow you to fit Marquez into a lot of lineups, and I think they will likely get overlooked since most DFS players tend to use pitchers against them instead of their bats.

Pirates-Brewers game stack

This game might fly under the radar a bit, but both pitchers are pretty hittable and both offenses have some good hitters we want to target in Miller Park.  Travis Shaw would be my favorite Brewer and has 3 bombs off Ivan Nova, while Gregory Polanco would be the Bucco bat I build around. Target the lefties from both teams in this game.

Some quick hits…

Mike Trout has two homers and a .385 average off Erasmo Ramirez. Trout may be the top overall player on the slate and I’ve noticed his ownership has tailed off recently. Make sure you get some.

Nelson Cruz against a lefty – even if he’s a pretty good lefty in Heaney – is an elite spot. He’s got three bombs off him in only 16 plate appearances.

David Peralta is 3-4 with 2 walks against Charlie Morton, who has been trending down over the last month. I love lefties against Morton because if he leaves a sinker up over the plate it’s usually right in their wheelhouse. I think Peralta can crush one off Morton if is struggling with control and leaving pitches up in the zone.

That’s it, folks, make sure you check our slack throughout the day for more advice during the day. If you’re not a DFS ARMY member yet, what are you waiting for???
