Schnarr’s Super Picks PGA DFS Preview – The Northern Trust

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station and give a few players to target in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

Wyndham Championship DFS Review

Webb Simpson – T2 – 120 DK Points

A terrific Sunday saw Webb vault up the leaderboard all the way to T2 overall. I was a little surprised to see Webb under 20% owned here across GPP’s. Webb averaged 15.28% across the major GPP’s and I was luckily overwight with 25% ownership.

Hideki Matsuyama – T11 – 99.5 DK Points

With Webb above and Henrik Stenson below in salary I thought it was very likely that Hideki saw around 5% ownership (he ended up at 6.57% average). Although Hideki’s play has been sloppy as of late I thought that this was a coruse that fit his game when he was on, and that if he was on he has the talent to win. Hideki was never in contention to win but his 99.5 DK points put him as the 11th best fantasy player for the week.

Joaquin Niemann – T33 – 89.5 DK Points

I was hoping that the T71 finish in his last event would cause ownership to go down a little bit on Niemann. As the week went on it was looking more and more like the field was on Niemann as he ended up with the third highest ownership average for the week. Despite higher ownership than I would like I was still on Niemann as the underlying numbers behind his performance this season are simply too good to pass up on.

Ryan Moore – T6 – 104.5 DK Points

I wrote up Moore as a guy who would be highly owned on Draftkings because of the price and low owned on FanDuel because of the price. Both turned out to be true but ownership surely wasn’t a concern for owners on DraftKings as you saw Moore vault up the leaderboard.

Chris Kirk – T11 – 93.5 DK Points

Kirk was as close to a free box as you come this week on DraftKings given the low pricetag. Kirk was in 54% of line-ups in the $2120 GPP on DraftKings and averaged over 40% ownership across all GPP’s. Kirk was one of my must have cash game plays and if you followed our cheat sheet he hopefully showed up in your line-ups too.

DFS PGA Course Preview

Ridgewood Country Club is a par 71 measuring 7,385 yards. The course has hosted the Barclays Championship on three separate occasions; in 2014 Hunter Mahan won at -14, 2010 saw Matt Kuchar prevail at -8 and Vijay Singh was victorious in 2008 at -8. The course has some unique features that I am deciding to save for members only this week, want to know about the event and get another VIP Article/Podcast/unlimited SlackChat access to bounce your ideas for the week of off other members? The Northern Trust Field of DFS Players

Brooks Koepka – DK: $10500 FD: $12300

As I was writing this I found it kind of funny how Brooks has two major wins but also failed to make the cut at the Canadian Open. Golf is a funny game and variance can be crazy from a DFS perspective so although no pick is ever safe I see Brooks as a solid option for the week. Brooks obviously won in his last appearance at The PGA Championship and I see his skill set really translating to Ridgewood Country Club despite the skills he is most known for not necessarily being the skills that lead to success at this course.

Tiger Woods – DK: $10100 FD: $11900

Who would have thought we would be seeing Tiger come FedEx cup season? Well the 2 individuals (out of 230ish) who took Tiger in my year long pool will probably argue they did, no one could reasonably say we would see Tiger legitimately competing in majors and one of the top players to win every week according to odds. Tiger is coming in with ridiculously good form with three finishes T6 or better in his last four. Tiger is Tiger and he will be highly owned because of it, could we finally see the breakthrough win?

 Justin Rose – DK: $9900 FD: $12000

Depending where you look you could either argue Justin Rose is severely under-priced or slightly overpriced. Any injury concerns surrounding Rose should be put away unless Rose says otherwise this week. I was off of Rose at The PGA Championship with him not playing practice rounds. Despite not being at his best Rose put together a solid four days to finish T19. With another week off rest Rose should be ready to go and display why he is second only to DJ in Fantasy Points per contest this season. I think Rose should be extremely chalky given his price tag but with so many options up top its hard to say exactly where he will end up. As the week goes on we should have a better understanding of that the number should be around.

 Francesco Molinari – DK: $9500 FD: $11600

This is a very early assessment, and we will have to see how this week goes, but I feel as if the buzz has worn off of Molinari despite a T6 performance at The PGA Championship. Molinari checks the boxes this week for me and has obviously shown insane form as of late. I think regardless I will be on Molinari as I don’t see him as a chalk donkey, but even if he comes one I think Molinari would be chalk that I am comfortable playing/being overweight of the field.

 Hideki Matsuyama – DK: $8800 FD: $10900

Hideki flashed just enough form to make me a believer again. I find Hideki especially interesting on DraftKings where he will surely be under owned compared to others around him in salary. With Snedeker coming off of a win, Adam Scott coming off a great performance and continual chalky players ZJ, Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau I see Hideki slipping through the cracks.

Matt Kuchar – DK: $8200 FD: $10400

The prototypical cash game play has been uncharacteristically missing cuts as of late and has been incredibly shaky. If there were a course for Kuchar to return to form, why not one he won at in 2010? I’m still not sure if I will be playing Kuchar for the week but I think it is a great opportunity to get a former winner who is a spectacular course fit at low ownership.

DK: $7900-7700 (Alex Noren, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Marc Leishman, Xander Schauffele, Gary Woodland, Louis Oosthuizen)

This range, (and you could really include Ian Poulter and Kevin Na) is LOADED with talent at a bargain price-tag. You can more or less make the case to play just about anyone in this range and that should make it interesting to see how ownership breaks down amongst the players. Because I see all of the players as good plays my GPP strategy will likely be to go overweight on who I think the field is pivoting away from. Currently, I see Noren, RCB and Poulter as the top owned in this range and although I certainly want pieces I will be loading up on the guys I can get at a fraction of the ownership (probably will still have all of the Noren tho, check back in SlackChat).

As always, these are initial thoughts and not necessarily the plays I will be making.  As the week goes on I will update my thoughts in our member SlackChat as well as discussing multiple other players and my thoughts for both Cash and GPP’s.
