Blande’s Bland Take: WNBA DFS Rundown and Picks 8/17/2018

Hi there! I’m Glen but I go by Blande and you can find me on twitter as @DfsBlande . I’m here over at the DFS Army with coverage of WNBA. We have a huge five-game slate on our hands today. To be successful we will have to take some strong stands today to narrow down the player pool. Without much ado, let’s get to business!

  • Minnesota Lynx @ Connecticut Sun

The Lynx have clinged a playoff spot and appear to have resigned themselves to the 7th seed. I do not like anyone on this Lynx team today. Their best two players Sylvia Fowles and Maya Moore are in tough spots and will struggle to hit value today. Don’t get me wrong, these are two of the best players in the league, with Moore considered one of the greatest, but there’s just not enough team support. Both Fowles and Moore are usable in GPPs, but limit exposure. Tanisha Wright and Sydney Colson are deep GPP Flyers. I most likely won’t touch them, but they could be used in MME.

Much of the Sun team is in play today, however, they are not really good Cash pieces here. The Lynx have been exploited by good centers this season, however both Chiney Ogwumike and Jonquel Jones have struggled in the meetings against them this season. Alyssa Thomas has a nice matchup here as well with Brunson out, but she has really struggled recently. Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Williams have some of the best matchups for guards on this slate, but once again have struggled to perform against the Lynx. It’s almost like these two teams have the keys to limiting each other. That said, Jasmine Thomas, Courtney Williams, and Alyssa Thomas are the top GPP plays here.

  • Los Angeles Sparks @ Washington Mystics

Let’s make this simple. The only guard of the Sparks I’m interested in is Riquna Williams because she’s cheap and performs. I have no interest in anyone else! Both Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike are in play here today. One of them will have a huge game while the other one will have an average game. We are all aware of my inability to accurately pick between them, the data suggests Candace Parker is the better play.

Another simple call here. The only guards I have interest in here are Monique Currie (if Ariel Atkins is out), and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt (if Natasha Cloud is out, which is unlikely). If Cloud goes from probable to out, Shatori Walker-Kimborough could see some minutes making her a cheap GPP punt. That said, the two top plays here are Elena Delle Donne and LaToya Sanders. Sanders is a little too expensive for me in this matchup.

  • Las Vegas Aces @ Dallas Wings

This is the game of the night! Both the Wings and the Aces are fighting for the final playoff spot. You can be sure the battle will be fierce and there’ll be a lot of fantasy goodness available. If you are MMEing, this is the game to target and build around. For the Aces, A’ja Wilson and Kayla McBride are the top plays and are playable in all formats. Their matchups are excellent! Kelsey Plum, Tamera Young, and Carolyn Swords make for excellent GPP plays here as well. Dearica Hamby and Moriah Jefferson make for deep GPP flyer picks.

Liz Cambage is the top play on this slate. This is a dream matchup for her, and with the playoff fight, we can expect something phenomenal. Skylar Diggins-Smith also has a good matchup. Now, I don’t play Cambage and Diggins-Smith in the same lineup, and today Cambage is the way to go. Both are playable in all formats depending on how you lean. With Glory Johnson still dealing with injury, Azura Stevens and Kayla Thornton make for interesting GPP plays today. Even Theresa Plaisance is in play as a GPP punt today. Stacking these two teams make for an excellent start to a GPP lineup build.

Before jumping to the final two games, let’s take a moment to congratulate our own baselinej33 for taking down the FD GPP on the last slate for a cool $2,250 (tied with 3 others). Join the DFS Army and get access to our tools and coaches and you can become a winner too.

  • Atlanta Dream @ Phoenix Mercury

The Dream have their hands full tonight. The top play for the Dream is Tiffany Hayes. She is in an exploitable spot here against Taurasi, in fact, this is the best spot on the board for shooting guards. Another solid play here is Brittney Sykes who will get a shot at an exploitable Talbot defense. Jessica Breland has been excellent since Angel McCoughtry went down, the matchup here is an excellent one for her as well. All three of these players are playable in all formats. Alex Bentley is a strictly GPP play due to her high upside but low minutes.

For the Mercury, Britney Griner is the anchor of this team. However, this is not a good matchup for her. Griner is capable of going off today, but keep in mind it’s not a good spot. I want no part of Diana Taurasi today. The matchup against Hayes is just terrible and she is too expensive to play in this kind of spot. Instead DeWanna Bonner makes for a great all format play today. The matchup is exploitable, and her floor and ceiling are both high. Stephanie Talbot and Briann January make for punt plays, with Talbot being usable in all formats while January is relegated to GPPs.

  • New York Liberty @ Seattle Storm

Liberty injury status: Epiphany Prince, Shavonte Zellous, Amanda Zahui B – OUT. Kia Vaughn is doubtful. Tina Charles is not listed. I’m fully fading Tina Charles. I’m not convinced she plays tonight and even if she does, I don’t like the matchup. We won’t know anything until well after lock, so just fade her and rest easy. With that out of the way, there’s really nothing to like here. Kiah Stokes, Kia Nurse, and Sugar Rodgers are playable in GPPs. I don’t like anyone else. I can see using Rebecca Allen as a GPP punt, but I won’t go there.

For the Storm, the blowout factor fear is high tonight. You could easily see their top stars playing 25 minutes. That said, they could do a lot of damage tonight. The top three plays here are Breanna Stewart, Jewell Loyd, and Natasha Howard. They are playable in all formats, although it’s much safer to relegate them to GPPs. Also avoid playing all three together and try to play just one of them in each lineup. Sue Bird is always a good Cash play, however, keep the blowout theory in mind. Jordin Canada and Crystal Langhorne come into play in GPPs if this game is over early.
