Blande’s Bland Take: WNBA DFS Rundown 8/5/2018

Hi there! I’m Glen but I go by Blande and you can find me on twitter as @DfsBlande . I’m here over at the DFS Army with coverage of WNBA. Four games today, with two at 3 pm and two at 7 pm ET. Draftkings has all four games on the same slate with their late swap option, while Fanduel has broken the games into an early slate and a late slate. The late two games are predicted to be low scoring affairs, while the early games are expected to be higher scoring. There’s not much injury concern on the slate today, with the only question mark being Skylar Diggins-Smith, whom latest reports indicate is questionable. Let’s dive in!

  • Las Vegas Aces @ Connecticut Sun

The Aces won the previous meeting in a close, high scoring affair. Today, A’ja Wilson and Kayla McBride will look to recreate the same magic, however, there are some key differences here. Both Alyssa Thomas and Courtney Williams didn’t play in the previous meeting, completely changing the makeup of today’s game. That said, Wilson is the top target for the Aces, with the ability to put up huge numbers. While Carolyn Swords is in a neutral matchup, it is an exploitable one. Tamera Young is in a complex position due to the fluidity in the Sun’s rotation there, she is playable in Cash games due to her high floor. I’ll diverge from the industry here in my recommendation of a Kayla McBride fade if you are only doing a handful of lineups. If you are MMEing, make sure to have a few shares, but limit your exposure. I just don’t believe in playing guards against the Sun. The same holds true for Kelsey Plum and Moriah Jefferson.

The centers are excellent plays here. Chiney Ogwumike has seen a drop in minutes in recent games, if that pattern continues as I expect, then Jonquel Jones is the better play here (fair warning, I’m still chasing the GPP win with JJ). Alyssa Thomas is back, and she walks into an exploitable matchup. Look no further than her opening night stat sheet for what she is capable of doing here. I do not play Shekkina Stricklen, instead I’ll have some shares of Morgan Tuck in this excellent matchup. Use Tuck only in GPPs, as you are banking on her getting minutes, something which is inconsistent. Courtney Williams is on a roll right now, and I don’t see anything that can stop her. Play her in all formats. Jasmine Thomas is more of a cash play here today, with a ceiling of around 30 fantasy points.

  • Washington Mystics @ Dallas Wings

The Mystics go as Elena Delle Donne goes. EDD is in play today against a Wings team that is one of the worst at stopping power forwards. While EDD will be a popular play today, there are other studs who could be in overall better positions. LaToya Sanders went bunkers in the previous meeting between these two sides. She is in play today in all formats, and hopefully this time around she can stay out of foul trouble. Aerial Powers gets a shot against her former team here, and I want as much of that as I can get. The more minutes Powers gets, the less Monique Currie and Ariel Atkins get. Kristi Toliver is my top play for the Mystics today, the matchup is good, and she’ll need to put up a lot of shots to get a victory for the Mystics today. Finally, with Skylar Diggins-Smith back, I have no interest in Natasha Cloud.

In cash, just plug in Liz Cambage and move on. She’ll be highly owned in GPPs as well, so there’s an opportunity to fade her here, however, do so at your own peril. This is a neutral spot for Glory Johnson. I’ll have limited, if any, ownership due to her inconsistency. The same goes for Azura Stevens. Kayla Thornton makes for a nice GPP play, just keep in mind it is a tough matchup and she has a very low floor here. Skylar Diggins-Smith and Allisha Gray are in similar positions, and I have no interests in them as they are too expensive. Remember if you are playing Cambage, do not play Diggins-Smith. And yes, the word is Diggins-Smith is probable to play today, so I expect her out there. Make sure to double check on that before lock though.

  • Phoenix Mercury @ Los Angeles Sparks

Britney Griner is the top play in this game, and for the Mercury. The big question here is what lineup the Mercury go with. Do they go big with Camille Little at the four, or do they go smaller with DeWanna Bonner in there? If they go small, I have very little interest in Bonner who gets a brutal matchup against Nneka Ogwumike. However, Stephanie Talbot comes into play as a nice value play in all formats. If they go big, then I have zero interest in Talbot, and a little bit more interest in Bonner in GPPs. Diana Taurasi will have Alana Beard all over her today like an apron, good luck playing her today. Briann January is not in play for me as well. Basically, the plays are Griner, and Talbot if, and only if, she starts.

I don’t pick on Griner, so no Candace Parker for me today. Instead, Nneka Ogwumike is my top play for the Sparks, no matter whether the Mercury go big or small. The matchup is excellent against either Little or Bonner. Alana Beard will have her hands full guarding Taurasi, leaving little room for any offensive output. She is only playable as a pivot from Talbot on the Draftkings main slate. She could be used as a punt play as well if value is needed on the Fanduel main slate. I have little interest in Odyssey Sims and Essence Carson as they cap the upside of each other. Finally, Chelsea Gray is playable in Cash games due to her high floor, however, her upside is limited by the good defense of Briann January.

  • Atlanta Dream @ Minnesota Lynx

Centers have been able to exploit the Lynx recently, making Elizabeth Williams GPP worthy today. I won’t go crazy here, but it’s a good play. Jessica Breland has held her own well against the Lynx this season, but her high inconsistency makes this a strictly GPP play. I’m not a huge fan on Angel McCoughtry here against Maya Moore, in a brutal matchup, but we all remember her game winning performance earlier in the season. Tiffany Hayes is in an excellent position here, as is Renee Montgomery. Both are playable in all formats, although some caution should be exercised with Montgomery. I love Brittney Sykes today; the matchup is excellent, and she can put up huge fantasy points if she gets the minutes. Finally, Imani McGee-Stafford makes for an excellent GPP punt play here.

For the Lynx, it all starts with Sylvia Fowles, who is in a great spot. Fowles is playable in all formats and is a great contrarian pivot off the chalkier studs. Rebekkah Brunson has struggled against the Dream this season, however, power forwards have found success against the Dream. This tension between the numbers and Brunson’s performance is something we can exploit. The contrarian move is to use Brunson in GPPs, where her ownership would be extremely low especially on Draftkings. I love Maya Moore here today, she has to get out of her recent poor form at some point, and this is the right matchup to do it in. She’s playable in all formats, with a slight lean towards GPPs. I have zero interest in Seimone Augustus in a brutal matchup. Finally, Lindsay Whalen and Danielle Robinson make for GPP punt plays.
