Schnarr’s Super Picks PGA DFS Preview – The Open Championship

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station and give a few players to target in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

John Deere Classic Review

Francesco Molinari – T2

I wrote up how my initial thought on Molinari was he would be highly owned despite Zach Johnson also being owned highly in the top tier. As the week went on it became apparent that Molinari would not see significant ownership, which made him extremely viable in GPP’s. I was off of Molinari in cash games in favour of Zach Johnson. If it wasn’t for Michael Kim playing out of his mind we likely would have seen Molinari win yet again after a great T2 performance.

Joaquin Niemann – T23

Out of the second tier of top end salaries Niemann was by far my favourite play. I thought that Zach Johnson being directly above him would somewhat minimize ownership, which unfortunately did not happen. However, the 89.5 DK points put him in 4th for players priced above 9k and outside of Molinari going off for 120.5 DK points Zach Johnson, Austin Cook and Niemann were only separated by 2 points on DraftKings so his 4th is a lot better than it sounds.

Wesley Bryan – MC

Was I sure wrong on this one. The recent performance as well as course history were pulling me towards Bryan well ownership was looking right around 10% to me. With ownership staying low I was all over Bryan which definitely hurt many of my line-ups this week.

Chez Reavie – MC

I pointed out Reavie as obvious chalk in both cash games and GPP’s. Although I used Reavie in GPP’s I came in well under the average GPP ownership of 36%. I did however use Reavie in my cash game line-up which did hurt a little, fortunately for me so did everyone and their mother so the missed cut still allowed me to contend for the money line on the weekend.

Interesting plays

Rory McIlroy – DK: $11000 FD: $11500

In recent years no one has had a better British Open history than Rory McIlroy. The up and down results really do not worry me as McIlroy always seems to bring it up a notch when The Open rolls around. It becomes increasingly tough to project ownership in Majors when all of the top players show up but I think among those above 10K on DraftKings I would suspect Rory is number 1 come the end of the week but I imagine they will be pretty close. Despite this, I currently have Rory as my favourite play in this range and I will definitely be discussing him later in the week in SlackChat.

Rickie Fowler – DK: $9700 FD: $11400

Rickie has been playing great golf but the narrative I keep hearing is that he can’t win here and this wont be his first major. Coming off of a T6 and no finish outside of the top 20 in his last five events Rickie is coming in to the event fighting Justin Rose for top form among this top tier. I don’t believe the narrative surrounding Fowler (maybe because I bet him outright months ago) but I do get a little worried for DraftKings purposed that Fowler becomes highly owned. Currently, I am high on Fowler and will likely have him regardless but I will be checking back in with our DFSArmy’s own dfsupnorth for his Chalk Donkey article.

Tiger Woods – DK: $8900 FD: 10800

After seeing Tiger finish T4 at Quicken Loans many were declaring that he is officially back, just in time for another major. Tiger played great golf at his last outing but I am still not convinced on him. Also, Tiger will carry ownership just because of his name. I think I will be off of Tiger this week and hope he gains ownership while those directly around him go under owned.

Francesco Molinari – DK: $8600 FD: $10400

Molinari is interesting to me because he is in terrific form but has historically had trouble at The Open Championship, making 5/9 cuts with only one top ten. I always lean towards recent performance over course history but at The Open Championship when we typically see the same players perform well on these tough links courses I see myself going the other way. I really do not know what to make of Molinari currently and will definitely be talking about him later in the week in our SlackChat.

Henrik Stenson – DK: $8200 FD: $11600

There is lots of speculation that Stenson’s withdrawal at the Scottish Open is not a real injury. I really have no clue and I am usually worried whenever you hear about wrist injuries with golfers but I think I am going to take the chance on Stenson this week and ride the low ownership on a hot player. Obviously, this is a Monday preview and we will likely get more clarity to the situation throughout the week but I think people will be worried and if Stenson says that he’s fine going into the event then I will be trusting him.

Hao-Tong Li – DK: $7300 FD: $8300

This time last year hardly anyone knew the name Hao-Tong Li. Following a fantastic round on Sunday, Li finished his Open Championship debut with a third place finish. Recently, we have not seen much of Li outside of a T16 finish at the U.S. Open and a T23 finish at The Scottish Open. Li is in a range with lots of names that will be popular and I like the idea of taking a young guy who has shown up at majors in the past and recently.

Tony Finau – DK: $7200 FD: $10200

For those of you who aren’t members I will give away one freebie from our research station this week. Tony Finau is our projected top fantasy points per dollar play of the week on DraftKings. Finau (along with many at $7200 on DraftKings) is completely underpriced. Although he is still looking for that win this year, Finau has continually been in contention this year and has finished top 30 in both previous Open Championship appearances. Finau is a cash game lock for me and I will likely be going overweight on the field even with Finau looking like one of the highest owned players on the week.

As always, these are initial thoughts and not necessarily the plays I will be making.  As the week goes on I will update my thoughts in our member SlackChat as well as discussing multiple other players and my thoughts for both Cash and GPP’s.
