DFS Army World Cup Coverage: June 15 for DraftKings & FanDuel

It’s that wonderful time that comes once every four years, when everyone is excited about  soccer, that’s right, the World Cup is here! And with Daily Fantasy Sports being bigger than other, the prize pools are among the biggest DFS Soccer players have ever seen. So let’s get into breaking down these games and help you make better lineups.

For those of you new to DFS soccer, I’ve created an introductory video: DFS Soccer Introduction & Strategy

Game-By-Game Breakdown

Before we get to the games and picks, it’s important to remember that being available when lineups are released is a key factor for success. Formations can give you a great idea of a team’s general strategy and how a game will play out. Unfortunately, we don’t know those until an hour before kick-off and for purposes of this article, I will be working with projected lineups and formations. While that may seem like bad news, it’s actually where I believe our members gain a significant advantage with access to the Slack Chat to analyze these changes in that crunch time before lock.

Egypt vs. Uruguay

I hope you read the intro paragraph of these breakdowns, because we immediately run into the lineup lock situation. The status of one of the best players in the world, Mohammed Salah, who is dealing with a shoulder injury. Thankfully, this is the first game on the slate so we will have a bit of clarity. Personally, I don’t think he starts but will possibly come on as a late sub – his status is truly up in the air. The Uruguians are the largest favorite on the slate and don’t have the most name value with both Spain and Portugal playing – they are among my favorite plays. I’m listing their front three projected front three below, I would not stack all three but Giorgian De Arrascaeta is my favorite cash game option as the distributor on the team while I’ll almost certainly have one of the two strikers on most of my GPP teams. I won’t have many shares of Egypt, assuming Salah is out, Mohammed Elney and Ramadan Sobhi are super cheap on DraftKings and are viable puns while the center backs are 100% in play on FanDuel. If you think Egypt can manage some success without Salah, Mohammed Eleny is probably the reason why

Uruguay Plays: Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Luis Suarez, Edison Cavani
Egypt Plays: Ali Gabr (FanDuel), Ahmed Hegazy (FanDuel), Ramadan Sobhi (DraftKings), Mohammed Eleny (DraftKings)

Morocco vs. Iran

This game is the one that is going to go the most overlooked as the marquis match up is slated for the hammer and Uruguay and Spain are larger favorites than Morocco. However, there will be value here, mostly because no one is priced up. Morocco is a +120 favorite in this one but Iran has been in decent defensive form and this one has a projected low total. That being said, Hakim Ziyech is my top target in this game as the prime play maker for the Moroccans, creating in open space while managing the corners, penalties, and free kicks. The fullbacks are in play for Morocco, particularly Hamza Mendyl on DraftKings (make sure he starts), but I also have GPP only interest in the projected striker Khalid Boutaib. Because of the potential for two-way scoring in a 4-2-3-1 formation, I’m mostly looking at the Iranian fullbacks, Milan Mohammadi and Pejman Montzaeri, in addition to the striker Sardar Azmoun in GPPs.

Morocco Plays: Hakim Ziyech, Hamza Mendyl (DraftKings), Khalid Boutaib (GPP)
Iran Plays: Milan Mohammadi (DraftKings), Pejman Montzaeri (DraftKings), Sardar Azmoun (GPP)

Portugal vs. Spain

The first clash of the titans at this year’s World Cup and we have a little bit of extra drama here that adds to the narrative. Spain literally fired and replaced their manager on Wednesday for taking a new club-team job just before the World Cup, not stellar timing. Even with that, Spain is still a decent favorite but I think this game is going to be tight and Portugal has one of the best players in the world in Cristian Ronaldo who could be the chalk on the slate. While I get it, he’s also priced up on an underdog and probably needs two goals to exceed value. I’m playing Ronaldo but not going all in because there are plenty of pivots that can score the same amount of points for less. I’m a sucker for Ricardo Quaresma, I’ll probably write up him in every Portugal match, he’s an accumulator of peripheral stats and has goal/assist upside, sign me up. Beyond those two Cedric Soares gets involved a lot in the attack and plays as a defender, so he’ll be my third pick here. On the Spanish side, the first name that stuck out to me is an unlikely one as Andres Iniesta is under priced if he lines up where I expect him to for the favorites. Isco and David Silva are the distributing players for the Spanish but I think I may make a stand and go underweight to Isco based on his price (unless he plays out wide). On the back line the center backs are on my FanDuel radar as they deal with Ronaldo and Jordi Alba is a defender pivot for GPPs as a full back.

Portugal Plays: Cristian Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Cedric Soares
Spain Plays: Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Jordi Alba (DraftKings), Sergio Ramos (FanDuel)

That’s what I have for you today, good luck and I’ll see you in Slack tomorrow morning!
