Sez’s 2018 Fantasy Football Best Ball and MFL10 Rankings – QB Position

Who’s ready for some best ball?!!  Ok, let’s try that again.  Who’s ready for some season long football?!!  Am I getting warmer?  Well, what if I told you to only focus on drafting for season long NFL?  And, what if I told you no lineup setting, no trades, no waiver wire to watch?  Just drafts.  That’s “best ball” also known as MFL10s.  DFS Army has access to one of the best minds helping us organize our thoughts, strategies, and game plans to dominate yet another area of DFS.

Season Long Sez (better known as Alan Seslowsky) is that mind.  If you aren’t following him on Twitter, you should be.  Just click the link.  He’s full of small tips, rankings, and general strategies meant to guide you in your quest for best ball, or MFL10,  domination.  Below, is his podcast with FFootballgeek as they talk season long, the 2018 draft, and where all that fits into this year’s landscape.

What Is Best Ball / MFL10?

Best ball is a simple form of season long NFL based solely on the draft phase of the game.  He who drafts best wins.  Period.  If you want a simple crash course, the game really is as simple as this image from PlayDraft says.

Today, I will be giving you Sez’s rankings for the quarterback position, but we will also have future articles for each position as he releases them.

From Sez:  Here are my best ball ranks. They will be updated all off season when our on the ground intelligence changes. I rank by position. I find overall rankings not as useful as we are often looking to fill positional needs. Keep in mind in best ball that usually only the top 2 or 3 finishers get paid. We need to play the 75th percentile outcome on our picks. Unlike our season long regular leagues; we can’t claw our way into the playoffs as a 4 seed and hope we get lucky.

Best Ball MFL10 – QB Rankings

The Top 10

Aaron Rodgers– At DFS Army we always draft our QBs late. But when we go early we take the player with the highest floor and highest ceiling.
Russell Wilson– Bad O-Line and decimated defense. Russ is in his prime. Great formula for QB success.
Tom Brady– The G.O.A.T. can be had in round 5 or 6. In 2017 he went in round 2. Not much changed.
Deshaun Watson– Would be my QB1 if he had not had the horrible injury. A healthy Watson might have been a late first round pick in re-draft. CRAZY!
Cam Newton– Cam is best coming off a perceived bad year. In the 7th he has the upside to be #1 overall fantasy player.
Jimmy GaroppoloDFS Army subscribers will be all in on Jimmy GQ. Did you see the side arm flick TD pass last year?
Ben Roethlisberger– In best ball we are high on Big Ben. In regular season long when you get those duds, we have him as a low end QB1.
Matthew Stafford– Perfect spot for Stafford. They are a pass happy squad. Not exciting but solid.
Kirk Cousins– I’ve seen the Cousins hype push him as high as QB4. Sometimes QBs that play with new WRs take a year to adjust. In a dozen best balls drafts so far..I own zero shares. There is always someone higher on him than I.
Jared Goff– A lot of rankings on the internet are lower on Goff. We see him as a sleeper even after a huge season. Brandin Cooks was added for big plays.

The Second 10

Drew Brees– He will be drafted as the QB 4 on name value in most drafts. If he falls to the 9th (which I have seen) I consider it. But as a 6th round QB…pass. Too much value later on.
Carson Wentz– We will monitor his injury during the offseason. Can rise to #2 or sink out of top 12. The Eagles unwillingness to trade Foles and the timing of Wentz’s injury lead me to believe he won’t be ready for week 1.
Philip Rivers– Boring pick that is on a ton of my teams. He is a great “floor pick” in best ball.
Matt Ryan– Same as Rivers but with higher end weapons. Just got PAID! He the newest 30 million dollar man
Patrick Mahomes– If you do a lot of best ball teams , feel free to reach for the rocket armed Pat Mahomes. But in a vacuum. He is a risky player. He is the QB11 in best ball so if you use my rankings you won’t get him.
Mitchell Trubisky– The 2017 #2 overall pick is my most owned QB. I see a similar narrative with Trubisky as I did with Goff in 2017. New offensive minded young aggressive coach. I am optimistic.
Derek Carr– I’m usually very low on Carr. However I think there is a chance new Coach John Gruden makes Carr a top 15 QB.
Marcus Mariota– Disappointed aggressive drafters last year. Solid Weaponry and running skills. If they let him loose He will be a tremendous QB value.
Jameis Winston– Wait on the QB drafters playing chicken at the position should be happy landing Winston in the 12th.
Dak Prescott– No name brand weapons. The talent alone makes him a safe QB2 in fantasy,

Notable Omissions

Blake Bortles– The good Blake Bortles is a top 6 fantasy option. The bad Blake Bortles is the guy we all know well. He is the last guy I feel like has legit upside.
Alex Smith– A top 5 QB last year, there is a chance he gets drafted in the top 12 by those who do not pay attention. He is a locked in starter but probably won’t be as aggressive passing downfield this year with job security.
Andrew Luck– Until I see him throw a regulation football he is on my do not draft list.
Eli Manning – Only moved Eli up because Giants are committed to him. I personally think Eli is done. But with ODB back and Saquon able to be a 50 catch RB,, Eli will be dragged to QB2 relevance.
Case Keenum– new team but has perceived job security. That is worth something in best ball.
Tyrod Taylor– Vegas under/Over on games started is 3.5. Hard to trust he will be there by week 6.
Andy Dalton– When job security is your best attribute you belong in the QB25 range
Ryan Tannehill
Sam Bradford
Baker Mayfield
Josh McCown
AJ McCarron
Jacoby Brissett
Lamar Jackson
Josh Rosen
Sam Darnold
Nick Foles
Josh Allen
Mason Rudolph
