Schnarr’s Super Picks DraftKings and FanDuel PGA Preview – Valero Texas Open

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station & VIP Research Station and give a few players to target on DraftKings and FanDuel in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

After taking last week off I want to quickly congratulate DFSArmy member Splash on his $100,000 win at the Masters!

Valero Texas Open Preview

The PGA Tour heads to San Antonio this week to play the TPC San Antonio, a 7,400 yard par 72. This course is long but in a different way than what we are used to seeing. Instead of long par fours TPC San Antonio features four longer par fives, limiting the advantage of par five scorers. The par fives measure 604, 602, 591 and 567 yards and as a result although we see players gaining strokes on these par fives they are not dominating them like other courses.

The course as a whole plays relatively difficult as it had the 10th highest stroke average on tour last week. With over 50 bunkers, tree-lines fairways and plenty of water hazards there is trouble to be found on majority of the holes.

With all of the trouble around the course I will be targeting Ball Striking. The course is long but it is not necessarily set up for bombers to dominate and players will need both length and accuracy to content.

As always, I will be focusing on Strokes Gained: Approach. This statistic is a very good indicator to success on Tour. Using our DFS Army PGA Research Station, I will be looking for players who have been gaining strokes in the short term as it is a good indication of players who are on there games right now.

Finally, more so than usual I will be factoring in Bogey Avoidance into my picks for the week. With a tough course having players that can avoid the big numbers will be important. Birdie or Better % will also be important for me as always. Using our Research Station makes it very easy to see which players have been scoring recently.

One final note, the field at this event is not the greatest so we see prices inflated in quite a few different players. There are also many that did not receive the bump I expected. With the Research Station we can sort by value and easily see whose prices

Picks

Charley Hoffman – Top End – DK: $10900 FD: $11200

Aside from a T40 finish at this event last year, Charley Hoffman has been dominant in San Antonio. Dating back to 2010, the T40 finish was Hoffman’s worst as he had never finished outside of the top 13 prior to last year. Recently, Hoffman has been solid with three straight top 25 finishes. Hoffman is near the top of the field in ball striking and checking all of the boxes in the other stat categories I am emphasizing for the week.

Luke List – All Formats – DK: $10000 FD: $10900

Although Luke List missed the cut last weekend and did not perform well here the year prior it is hard to ignore his recent success. List has now made eight straight cuts and finished no worse than T26 in that stretch. With three top tens in the same timeframe. List is dominating the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and the putter has been letting him down. As soon as the putting turns around we should expect List to finally get his win after being in contention so many recent weeks.

J.B Holmes – Cash Games – DK: $7800 FD: $$9400

Specific to DraftKings, I love the price for cash game purposes. After a few missed cuts for karma at the Farmers Insurance Open J.B has made five straight cuts and although none of the finishes have been near the top of the leaderboard, none of them have to be with the low salary we see. Although given the salary and recent finishes I am off of J.B I think he is a reasonable play in cash games and on my short list of players for the week.

Zach Johnson – Cash Games – DK: $8000 FD: $10700

Similar to J.B, Johnson is underpriced on DraftKings making him a solid pick in cash game formats. Despite the missed cut last year, Johnson made the cut the three years prior with all three finishes inside of the top thirty. This season Johnson has made the cut in every event he has participated in and appears to be a safe play for his price point.
