Schnarr’s Super Picks DraftKings and FanDuel PGA Preview – The CIMB Classic

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station & VIP Research Station and give a few players to target in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

Before we begin a quick Congratulations to DFS Army VIP member ‘Jhawkfan25’ who took home a $150,000 payday using a combination of VIP picks, A VIP only article and personal knowledge.

Course Breakdown

The tour is off to Malaysia! The CIMB Classic kicks off this Wednesday night (set line-ups early!) with a relatively strong field. Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama and Paul Casey headline a strong swing-season field. The tournament takes place TPC Kuala Lumpur and is a 7,005-yard par 72. Finally, The CIMB Classic is also our first no cut event of the season, with a field of only 78.

First and foremost, this course is SHORT. 7,005 yards is challenging for the average golfer, but for PGA Tour pros this is short. As a result, you get a lot of holes where players elect to leave the driver in the bag. Because of this, I won’t really be weighing driving distance or accuracy nearly as heavily on the week.

With the course being short and easy players will have plenty of opportunities to score off of their approach game. For me this week, it is coming down to Shots Gained: Approach. Here at DFSarmy.com our VIP Research Station allows players the opportunity to see key statistics by round. More importantly, members will be able to see how many strokes players are gaining/losing depending on the field they play against. It’s easy to gain strokes on the field during swing-season events but very hard during majors, knowing how many strokes a player is gaining/losing based on strength of the field is a huge advantage against the competition.

With no cut, it’s all about making birdies this week. Whether you play on DraftKings, FanDuel or Fantasy Draft finding the players who score will be key. I will be looking at players BOB% (Birdie or Better percentage) to find the guys that consistently put up more birdies than the rest of their competition.

Finally, Malaysia is far away. Justin Thomas snapchatted the journey from his home in Florida to Malaysia and it took him just over 28 hours. It is often a point argued throughout the DFS community, not so much that travel impacts performance but how much it actually does. I usually find myself on the side underselling the impact of travel, however, when players are going across the world it definitely makes an impact. With players traveling across the world, specifically, those who played in The Safeway Open on Sunday you should expect jet lag to play a factor. Unless players are jumping off of the page with their stats I will be likely avoiding many who made the late trip across the ocean.

Picks!!!

Justin Thomas – GPP – DK: $12300 FD: $10500

Despite the high price tag it is incredibly hard to go against Thomas this week. Not only is Thomas coming in with incredible form (two wins, and four of last five finishes inside of the top six) he has also won here in Malaysia the past two years. Thomas checks all of the boxes we are looking for this week and has shown his ability to run away from the field here at The CIMB Classic.

Thomas Pieters – GPP – DK: $8600 FD: $8000

One of my favourite plays when there is a no-cut event. According to our VIP Research Station Pieters is first in the field in field adjusted birdie or better%, edging out the aforementioned Justin Thomas. Pieters is not coming into the event in good form but he is one of those players that often finds himself all over the place on leaderboards. Some guys are consistent, some are not, Pieters falls into the second category and he could see suppressed ownership because of recent results.

 Wesley Bryan – DK: $6800 FD: $5200

He is not much of a birdie maker but Bryan is underpriced based on ability and is a sneaky course fit. In his short PGA career, Bryan has found success on short, easy golf courses. His win at the RBC Heritage came at a par 71, 7081-yard course. His T3 at the John Deere Classic came at the par 71, 7,258-yard course. Bryan struggles off of the tee distance wise but showed last year he can compete with just about anyone with a wedge in his hand. If you’re looking for a cheap GPP flier there are plenty of worse options out there.

 Rafa Cabrera-Bello – DraftKings Value – DK: $7400 FD: $8500

Despite opening with the 15th best odds to win the tournament Cabrara-Bello sees himself as the 32nd highest salary on DraftKings. Our DFS Domination Station lineup projections have him as one of the top five values on the slate. Looking at our PGA Research Station we see Cabrara-Bello has recently been losing strokes through distance off of the tee which is minimized through the course this week, while gaining strokes on the field in Birdie or Better %. Cabrara-Bello came tied for tenth here last year in his inaugural start. If you’re looking for a salary reliever Cabrera-Bello could be the play.

Xander Schauffele – FanDuel Value – DK: $9700 FD: $8200

Fresh off of his Tour Championship victory Xander showed the PGA world that he is legitimate. Despite this, he is way underpriced on FanDuel. Importantly for me this week, according to our VIP Research Station Xander has been picking up birdies on the field. In a not cut tournament, I cannot stress enough how important this is.

In the early events of the season, there is lots of uncertainty.  Our Domination Station and PGA Research Station will be out with projections, stats and plenty of information that can help with building lineups. Throughout the week our VIP members also have access to our Slack Chat which gives members the opportunity to bounce ideas off of one another which is great for getting a feel for what others are thinking.
