Schnarr’s Super Picks DraftKings and FanDuel PGA Preview – Wyndham Championship

Every week of the year the PGA Tour plays on a new course. There are some examples in other DFS Sports of environments impacting performance, such as Coors Field in Baseball; Golf, however, offers an entirely unique environment each and every week. This article will break down the week’s PGA course and attempt to find what skill sets are needed for success. This article will then combine the course breakdown with the DFS Army Domination Station and give a few players to target in both Cash Game and GPP formats. For more updates throughout the week follow me on twitter @_bschnarr

PGA Championship Recap

Jordan Spieth – GPP – (T28 – 59 DK Points)

Spieth was a little off all week and could not put together a performance you would expect from the highest priced salary. I initially picked Spieth because I felt he (along with Jason Day) would have the significantly lower ownership among player above $10000. As the week went on and others writers were acknowledging Spieth the ownership rose and although he was still well under Rory, Hideki and Rickie, Spieth still saw 13% average ownership in GPP’s.

Phil Mickelson – Cash – (Same as John Daly – 12 DK Points)

Phil looked terrible this week. Usually, when a golfer is playing this bad we stop seeing their shots. This week Golf Channel kept showing Phil and reminding me how bad this pick turned out to be. Phil had the course history and has generally shown up at majors over the years but just couldn’t put it together this week.

Kevin Chappell – GPP – (T33 – 55.5 DK Points)

Chappell was one of my favourite plays of the week as he combined course history, recent form and was a reasonable price. Chappell had me sweating the cut line Friday but ultimately made the cut and found his way right to the middle of the leaderboard.

Zach Johnson – All Formats – (T48 – 48.5 DK Points)

ZJ was another play I liked (specifically for cash) given his cheap price, high floor, and flexibility he gave you to spend up elsewhere in your line-up. Like the rest of my picks this week, Johnson was just a little off of his game and could not put together the four rounds needed to find himself near the top of the leaderboard.

Wyndham Championship Course Preview

The tour stays in North Carolina this weekend heading from Quail Hollow to Sedgefield Country Club. Sedgefield is a par 70 that plays 7,127 yards. This is the final event before the fed-ex cup playoffs begin and the field is reflective of this with very few of the top players playing this week. Henrik Stenson, Kevin Kisner and Brandt Snedeker (if he plays) headline a pretty weak field. Other notables include; Kyle Stanley, Jason Dufner, Bill Haas and Ollie Schniederjans.

As far as the course goes Sedgefield is very easy by PGA Tour standards as we regularly see the event become a birdie fest. The course features many short par fours, short par fives and is set up in conditions that allow for players to go low. Over the years we have seen many different types of players reaching the top of the leaderboard, which makes it difficult to pinpoint exact statistics that lead to success. I will still be looking at specific statistics but I will be relying heavily on Birdie or Better% to find players who standout and can put up high fantasy scores. I will also be looking heavily at current form and finding underpriced players on both DraftKings and Fanduel

Off of the tee, we have seen both accurate players and bombers perform well here. The course is forgiving as long as you are not way off and into trees which makes me lean Distance off of the tee but I will not be ignoring guys just because they don’t drive it 320. Instead, I will be prioritizing both Shots Gained: Approach and Par Four Scoring, Specifically from Par fours 400-450 yards with eight of them being spread out throughout Sedgefield.

Wyndham Championship Picks!

Henrik Stenson – GPP – DK: $11500 FD: $9800

It’s hard to ignore Stenson at the top of the board. After a rough start to the season, Stenson has turned it around and is looking like his old self with five straight finishes between T10 and T26. According to our field adjusted statistics, Stenson is near the top of the field in Shots Gained: Approach and has been gaining on the field in birdie or better %. Stenson does not have the greatest course history but I am willing to forgive that as I think his game can fit in just about anywhere when he is on. Although Stenson will surely see ownership I could see given Kisner’s recent performance and course history Stenson being lower owned of the top end salaries, which is fine by me.

Chez Reavie – All Formats – DK: $8100 FD: $7500

According to our Domination, Station Line-up Optimizer Chez Reavie is one of the best values off the week. Reavie has been playing good golf as of late making seven straight cuts, all within the top 50 including two majors with finishes of T16 (US Open) and T22 (PGA Championship).   Reavie’s success has been coming from his Approach game, where he has been gaining just under a stroke a round once field adjusted. I like Reavie’s affordable price tag and see the ownership low enough to be playable in GPP’s well the floor is high enough he makes a great cash game play.

Chad Campbell – Cash – DK: $7900 FD: $6800

Golfs next big thing Chad Campbell is starting to look like what was promised so many years ago. Campbell has made seven of his last eight cuts with no finish worse than 34th. The field has caught on as Campbell has regularly been on of the highest owned options in cash his last 2 events. I would expect more of the same this week in a weak field event where Campbell is reasonably priced.

Hao-Tang Li – GPP – DK: $7400 FD: $6900

Li has sprung together quite the season and I will continue to be on him well he remains underpriced and relatively unknown. Across the European, Tour Li has sprung up inside of the top 10 four times in sixteen starts, pretty impressive. Coming off of a missed cut and in a price range with lots of playable options, I would expect Li to see low ownership despite his high upside. Although he missed the cut last week at the PGA Championship he only missed by one stroke, his game is still there and if Li can get hot no one should be surprised if he gets his breakthrough win.
