Research Notes – Fanduel Advice for the Main Slate on Saturday, August 19th

**Before we get started I just want to show you exactly what we have upcoming for the NFL season. Football is upon us and whether it’s season-long fantasy football or DFS, the staff here at DFS Army has you covered. If this link doesn’t make you so excited that you want to run through a brick wall then I don’t know what will. Here is what is in-store for the 2017 NFL season.

This article is going to mesh what my normal notebook of research would look like with the presentation in a more articulate demonstration. Trust me, you don’t want to lay your eyes on my notebook. It resembles my toddler’s “drawings” of me and her mother. This “research notebook” will also give you a look into my personal process as a full-time guaranteed prize pool (GPP) competitor. Try not to get lost in the minutia of the numbers and enjoy the deep data dive. By the end, you will have a nice insider peek at my player pool for the main slate.

With the massive 14 game slate on the Fanduel main slate, we need to narrow down our focus for which games to target. In slack, we often discuss not needing as much correlation for cash games. In our large field GPPs, we know that correlation is king. These games provide us with offenses to target and stack up.

LAA@BAL

  • Tim Beckham has a .439 wOBA and .278 ISO against right-handed pitchers over the past month.
  • Stack him with Manny Machado who has a .388 wOBA and .259 ISO with a minuscule 7.7% strikeout rate against righties in the past four weeks.
  • Kevin Gausman remains one of my favorite GPP pitchers every time he is on the main slate. He has a 26.1% strikeout rate to righties and a 30.4% strikeout rate to lefties over the past month. Keep him to large field GPPs.

MIA@NYM

  • Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, and J.T. Realmuto are an exceptional three player stack against Rafael Montero.
  • Over the past month, Montero has given up a .497 wOBA and .426 ISO to right-handed hitters.

ARI@MIN

  • Both pitchers are viable large field GPP options. Fade both offenses.

OAK@HOU

  • I really like Collin McHugh as a large field GPP option. The A’s are hitting well as of late but McHugh has been rock solid this season. He has only allowed opposing hitters to have a 28% hard hit rate in 2017.
  • I like the Astros to get back on track as Kendall Graveman allows a lot of contact to lefties and only has a 6.3% strikeout rate against them over the past month.
  • I am targeting Jose Altuve, Josh Reddick, Marwin Gonzalez, and Derek Fisher if he’s near the top of the order.

CIN@ATL

  • Julio Teheran had a fantastic game in his last start. That said, I need to see it consistently before I buy in that he has figured things out. I love the Reds in GPPs as they profile well against Teheran.
  • Against righties over the past month, Zack Cozart has a .455 wOBA and .333 ISO, Joey Votto has a .506 wOBA and .250 ISO,  and Jesse Winker has a .382 wOBA and .194 ISO. They are my favorite targets for the Reds.

NYY@BOS

  • Chris Sale is the top pitching option on the entire slate. He’s a lock for cash games and is solid for small field GPPs.
  • The Red Sox are in a decent spot as CC Sabathia has allowed multiple home runs in both of his last starts and five in the past three games. He has struggled against righties over the past month, allowing a .392 wOBA and .323 ISO.
  • Eduardo Nunez has a .399 wOBA and .182 ISO against righties over the past month and is my favorite target. Chris Young is notorious for having excellent splits versus left-handed pitchers and is a cheap option that will likely be batting 4th or 5th. They are a simple mini-stack and I really don’t like targeting the Yankee pitchers that often because their bullpen often kills rallies.

CLE@KCR

  • Jason Vargas has slight reverse splits this season and I generally like targeting the Indians lefties more anyway.
  • Francisco Lindor has done much better against left-handed pitchers this season and leads off for the Indians. Jason Kipnis is still a nice low-cost option near the top of the lineup. Jay Bruce has been batting 5th and is still underpriced on Fanduel. Lastly, I like Austin Jackson who could be in the top half of the order and has a .421 wOBA and .240 ISO in his last 87 at-bats against left-handed pitchers.
  • Trevor Bauer has been just good enough this season to make it hard to attack him. That said, he has slightly below average splits against left-handed hitters.
  • Over the past month against righties, Eric Hosmer has a .422 wOBA and .209 ISO, Mike Moustakas owns a .462 wOBA and .391 ISO, and Brandon Moss has a .387 wOBA and .289 ISO.

CHW@TEX

  • I absolutely love targeting this game Saturday. Martin Perez has been terrible against right-handed hitters over the past month, allowing a .395 wOBA and .265 ISO with an 8.3% strikeout rate.
  • Tim Anderson has a .414 wOBA and .310 ISO against lefties over the past month and leads off. He’s my lock for this lineup. I’ll sprinkle in Jose Abreu, Asivail Garcia, and possibly Kevan Smith for large field GPPs.
  • The Rangers let a lot of people down on Friday which makes them excellent targets for large field GPPs.
  • Derek Holland is one of the worst pitchers in MLB against right-handed hitters. Over the past month, he has allowed them to have a .481 wOBA and .282 ISO against him.
  • Delino DeShields offers nice stolen base upside at the top of the order. I would stack Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre with him for a strong three man stack. If using this stack for large field GPPs you should add in Robinson Chirinos.

MIL@COL

  • It’s a great day to fade Coors Field. I am off both offenses because I like other offenses just as much and with better pricing. If you feel so inclined, roll with the lefties in the Rockies lineup.
  • Both Coors Field pitchers are decent large field GPP options.

WSH@SD

  • Stack Howie Kendrick, Ryan Zimmerman, and Anthony Rendon for a nice splits advantage over Travis Wood.
  • Fade both pitchers, especially Strasburg who might be on a pitch count.

PHI@SF

  • I actually think both of these pitchers are decent options for a large field GPP. I don’t like the bats in either game and it’s a great ballpark for pitchers.
