Walsh’s Wingmen: MLB DFS Player Picks for the Late Slate – Sunday, July 23rd

Follow me on Twitter: @14AdotWalsh

TEAMS FACING LEFTIES:

Atlanta Braves (vs LAD, Clayton Kershaw)
Los Angeles Dodgers
(vs ATL, Sean Newcomb)
Pittsburgh Pirates (@COL, Kyle Freeland)
San Diego Padres (@SF, Ty Blach)
St. Louis Cardinals (vs CHC, Jose Quintana)
Washington Nationals (@ARZ, Robbie Ray)

PITCHERS:

Clayton Kershaw (vs ATL) – No explanation needed, and no other options are viable.

STACKS:

Arizona Diamondbacks (vs WSH) – I’m aware that the roof on Chase Field will likely be closed, but we have seen Strasburg be absolutely terrible in the sweltering heat. Does the state of Arizona just put him in a bad mood? Not a totally crazy narrative…

Colorado Rockies (vs PIT) – Collective .388 avg, 1.182 OPS with 14 XBH (7 HR) in 89 plate appearances against Ivan Nova.

St. Louis Cardinals (@CHC) – The Cubs’ moneyline number has taken a significant downward turn since the open, so that is something to take into consideration. The Cards do have plenty of right-handed bats to attack Jose Quintana with and the best part is that no one will see this one coming.

Washington Nationals (@ARZ) – D-Backs starter Robbie Ray has an ERA of over three runs more at Chase Field than he does on the road and the Nationals have done some serious damage against lefties this season.

CATCHERS:

Francisco Cervelli (@COL) – His 11 hits are the most of any catcher in MLB since the All-Star break.

Gary Sanchez (@SEA) –  Usually the best hitting catcher on any given slate.

Austin Barnes (vs ATL) – Fairly decent numbers against lefties and he usually posts some solid totals when given the opportunity to start.

Ryan Hanigan (vs PIT) – 3-for-10 with 2 HR against Ivan Nova.

Chris Herrmann (vs WSH) – Usually puts up some good numbers when he gets the start and also has sneaky HR upside.

FIRST BASEMEN:

Anthony Rizzo (vs STL) – 15-for-31 with 4 XBH (3 HR) against Wacha.

Wil Myers (@SF) – He is starting to get back on track, homering in three of the last five games, including once in each of the first two games of this series against the Giants.

Ryan Zimmerman (@ARZ) – Excellent numbers against left-handed pitching this season and has a great hitter’s park as his venue.

Hanley Ramirez/Mitch Moreland (@LAA) – Excellent matchup for all Red Sox hitters today and these two are severely underpriced.

SECOND BASEMEN:

Dustin Pedroia (@LAA) – Leads all second basemen with 12 hits since the All-Star break.

Daniel Descalso (vs WSH) – Very cheap batting leadoff. Kind of a no brainer for your Kershaw lineups.

Logan Forsythe (vs ATL) – .348 avg, .470 OBP, .545 SLG, 1.015 OPS against left-handed pitching.

Joe Panik (vs SD) – Padres starter Dinelson Lamet has struggled mightily against lefty bats and Panik is a fine value option to use for all those Kershaw lineups.

THIRD BASEMEN:

Justin Turner (vs ATL) – .443 avg, .523 OBP, .841 SLG, 1.364 OPS with 17 XBH (9 HR) against left-handed pitching this season.

Anthony Rendon (@ARZ) – Excellent numbers against lefties this season.

David Freese (@COL) – Historically has good numbers against lefties.

Conor Gillaspie (vs SD) – Not sure if he’s getting the start, but this would be a good way to get cheap exposure to a lefty against Lamet.

SHORTSTOPS:

Trevor Story (vs PIT) – Hitting is Coors Field is rarely a bad thing, and Story has looked leaps and bounds better at the plate over the last few games.

Andrelton Simmons (vs BOS) – Hitting third today in the Angels lineup, something that we should probably take advantage of.

Brandon Crawford (vs SD) – Just like his teammate Panik, who I mentioned earlier, Lamet struggles against lefty bats and Crawford is perfect for all those Kershaw lineups.

OUTFIELDERS:

Charlie Blackmon, Gerardo Parra, Ian Desmond, Carlos Gonzalez (vs PIT) – All three guys are in great form and have excellent short-term BvP numbers against Ivan Nova.

Andrew McCutchen (@COL) – Excellent numbers against lefties and he is hitting .304 with a .452 OBP and 3 SB over the last seven games.

Chris Taylor, Kike Hernandez (vs ATL) – Taylor has been on fire since the All-Star break and he had a huge night off the bench last night…not to mention, he’s been fantastic against lefties. Kike’s numbers are good against lefties as well and he double-donged earlier this week in Chicago.

Chris Heisey/Ryan Raburn (@ARZ) – Both cheap options that will likely get the start against the lefty Robbie Ray. Raburn was scratched late, but did end up making a pinch-hit appearance. Heisey filled in and performed admirably hitting a triple. Both Heisey and Raburn have homered against Ray before in their respective careers.

Hunter Renfroe/Jose Pirela/Manuel Margot (@SF) – Renfroe has good power numbers against lefties so this matchup against Blach is a favorable one, even in a terrible hitter’s park. Renfroe can hit it to the moon so I wouldn’t be too worried about him hitting in AT&T Park. Margot and Pirela are both nice value options that can get on base and make some things happen by putting a few balls in the gap.

Kole Calhoun (vs BOS) – 7-for-15 with 2 HR against Rick Porcello

Matt Holliday (@SEA) – 12-for-35 with 7 XBH (4 HR) against Yovani Gallardo
