DFS BANKROLL CHALLENGE $100 – $1000 Introduction

Hey this UW81 aka Chasing21. This is my concurrent blog over on Chasing21.  If you like what I’m writing and want to follow along, check out the updates there and on twitter

Welcome to the Bankroll challenge. The concept is pretty simple: turn $100 into a $1000 over the course of time following showcasing that even if you have a limited budget, time, and knowledge of a large cross section of sports, you can still be a winning player. It just requires effort on your part to make sure you’re getting the right information and applying it correctly. *Receive 20% off your membership with code 20-OFF by clicking through my link DFSArmy.com.

About me: I’m a full time corporate grinder working anywhere from 45-55 hours a week, Monday through Friday while finding time to still compete in DFS. Since I’m at work during most sports lock times, I use my phone for 100% of my research process as well as interaction with the DFS Sites.  I have a family that needs my attention at night and other priorities splitting my time away from researching. This series will give you an idea how to build a bankroll through multiple sports. DFSArmy.com teaches you how to build winning lineups, manage your funds, pick contests, and a community to all your own. Every week I’ll be covering a new concept in depth and track the previous weeks progress. Follow me on twitter to get more frequent updates. I also produce content for the VIP section here for the Army.

Methodology: The main and nearly only resource I use is provided by DFSarmy.com. The site has coaches that teach you how to build line ups as opposed to purchasing them from unknown sources. They have a combination of their own home grown projections, optimizer, articles, and most importantly Slack chat for up to date conversations and information. I personally listen to the daily podcasts during the workday, check the premium slack chat during breaks, read the articles during lunch, and fire off my line ups shortly before lock right before I leave for the day. In general I spend less than an hour a day researching for NBA. I always aim to play the main slate, however if time is too big of a crunch with a late meeting, I will play later, smaller slates. Also it’s important to note I may not play at all on any given day. Some days there isn’t enough time to even get in the podcast or read articles, and that’s ok. You don’t need to play everyday or every slate to be profitable and have fun.

For now I’ll be focusing on running 1 lineup in all contests. This again goes to the agile nature I need to have running things 100% from my phone unless I have the day off or it’s the weekend. Generally speaking I would advocate for a multi-enter approach even at the $100 BR level for the GPP allotted BR. As example I’ll be starting out with the $1 Single Entry (SE) and $1 Multi-Entry (ME) contest with one line up. However if editing multi lineups was easier on my phone, I would advocate and recommend 8x entering the quarter arcade ($2). reason being is that it offers more upside if your core player group does really well vs. the single bullet into the other contests.

For the challenge I’ll be focusing on using the ladder system and will be playing ~ 8-11% of my total BR during each slate. In  nut shell, I’ll be playing 80% cash (more than 30% of the field is in the money) and 20% GPP (tournaments). Game selection plays a huge factor in success and it’ll be the first topic I’ll cover in depth later this week. We’re going to assume that this is the last $100 I can ever play on DFS and treat it as such. While following proper bankroll management may not be sexy, it’s what will keep you playing in the long run to keep things exciting when watching the games. This is where the grinding comes into play.

This challenge will be played 100% exclusively on Draft Kings for a few reasons. Any of the big sites is fine and I would recommend all of them. You’ll find your own preference as you continue to play. For example I prefer NFL on FD vs. DK.

  1. When you have a smaller starting bankroll, I would recommend focusing on one site because you can tailor all your research to one set of rules.
  2. (Until 3/13/17) DK had larger contests for golf than Fantasy Draft, has NASCAR, and a better mobile interface (personal opinion).
  3. I like the features of DK better than Fan Duel (FD), particularly the missions.
  4. While I do like some of the contests better on FD, I’ve always had better luck on DK.
