The Competition Caution 2017 NASCAR DFS Martinsville Preview

Long time, no talk! It’s been a busy week at the DFS Army headquarters and I couldn’t find the time for a full fledged “Competition Caution” article this week. So, instead of putting out something lackluster, I focused all my energy on tomorrow’s article. This is just a little preview, so make sure you check back tomorrow.  We are on a mega hot streak after taking down some GPPs last week and I am feeling really good about this weekend. Since this article is coming out a little early, I still have a TON of research to do, including analyzing final practice. I will post and update article on Saturday, but until then it would be a good idea to get signed up and get exclusive access to our projection model, the domination station lineup optimizer, and most importantly, direct chat room access to some of the sharpest NASCAR minds in the industry. I will be on there all weekend updating everyone on my research.

This week we are headed to the smallest track on the NASCAR circuit, Martinsville! Martinsville is an interesting day in fantasy NASCAR because we are going to run 500 laps – meaning finding a good dominator will be ESSENTIAL, and that is not an easy task. But, I am up for the challenge – let’s start with our review of Martinsville.

Track Size: 0.526 Mile

Race: 500 laps, 263 miles

Degree of Banking: Turns: 12 degrees

Straightaways: Banking: 0 degrees(flat)

Straights: 800 feet

Backstretch: 800 feet

Grandstand Seating: 55,000

Pit Stalls: 43 pits, 14-feet wide by 28-feet long

Speed Limits: Pit Road, 30 mph; Pace Car, 35 mph

This will be a very high scoring week with all those laps led and fast laps on the line – let’s start by looking at who dominated this race over the last few years.

Now we will dig into Jimmie Johnson a little bit later, but right now I think our focus should turn to Hamlin, Ky. Busch and Matt Kenseth. After a tumultuous start to the season – these three are in the best position to turn their fortunes around. Let’s look at performance at this track over the last two years.

First off – wow Kyle Busch. He has been putting it down here over the last couple races, and he has been the best of the three so far this season. I think he has a fantastic opportunity to dominate this race. He has looked slick in practice, and will roll off 10th. He is a guy that will probably end up in the top five at days end, and could potentially dominate.

Matt Kenseth – Starting 25th, Kenseth is going to be very hard to ignore. He has a very solid track history, and if his team can put a car under him, he will move to the front very fast.

Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin was fastest in first practice, and is sneakily one of the best Martinsville driver in the field. I think he will go overlooked this weekend because his season has been unremarkable so far. Spend some time with Hamlin today and tomorrow and see what you can find.

Jimmie Johnson – Johnson has cost a lot of people a lot of money this year – but I just can’t fade him at Martinsville, especially starting 17th. He is far and away the best pure passer in the field, and manipulates this track unbelievably well. I will update my thoughts tomorrow, but I would seriously consider working Johnson into a few of your lineups. His price may make it hard to do, but it could be worth it.

Another tool I want you guys to use this weekend is green flag passes. It is really hard to pass at Martinsville, and ranking high in this metric shows that you have a propensity to get around this track efficiently. The name at the top should catch your eye. If Almirola stays out of trouble, he WILL perform at Martinsville. But that is a BIG if. He’s also starting 18th, which is a tad high for a pure differential play. Keep an eye on him in practice, though. I will update my thoughts tomorrow.

Starting 20th, Austin Dillon is a top 20 lock with serious top 10 potential. He knows how to get around this track based on his green flag passes, and he has performed well here recently. Again, keep an eye on him in practice.

Lastly, keep an eye on Clint Bowyer. Ages ago, when Clint was driving top tier cars, he was actually a real player at Martinsville. His cars are clearly better now, and I honestly think he has potential to lead laps in this race. Don’t do much with this though yet – lets see how his Saturday goes.

Some other drivers you should looking into are Dale Earnhardt Jr, Ty Dillon, and Allmendinger*******. I’ll give you my thoughts on them and everyone else tomorrow!
