Chasing Birdies- Mawhee’s Travelers Championship Breakdown for Draftkings PGA

Chasing Birdies- Mawhee’s Travelers Championship Brea20160721_092239kdown for Draftkings PGA

@dfsarmy_Matt

This week brings us to the Travelers Championship, played at TPC River Highlands. River Highlands is another par 70 course like what we dealt with last week.  The big difference from last weeks PGA Champ par 70 venue, which stretched over 7400 yards, is TPC River Highlands only plays 6,841 yds.  This course will require golfers to be accurate off the tee or at least know where to miss.  Bubba Watson proved last year you don’t have to be in the fairway to win here.  Bubba lead the field in distance off the tee and ranked third to last in fairways hit.  Now he combated the missed fairways by leading the field in scrambling and only missing 2 puts all week inside 10 feet.  Looking back at this courses history it plays as a race track and there will be a lot of scoring.  So that’s exactly what will be looking for this week guys who put up alot of birdies, hit the fairway, and can scramble when needed.  Lets get into some of my top plays from the diff price ranges this week.

Top Tier $9,000+

Bubba Watson – No need to go to in depth here, Bubba is a two time defending champ and has absolutely demolished this course in the past.  You can add in that he hasn’t missed a cut this year and he makes for a solid play in all formats this week.

Jon Rahm– Here is my favorite play this week and my pick to win.  Over his last four tournaments Rahm has hit 63.7 percent of fairways, avg. 307 off the tee, and avg 28.3 puts per round.  All of which are extremely solid stats but not my favorite ones. The thing I like most about his form recently is he has avg over 15 birdies a week is his last three tournaments.  Rahm is a young fiery player and I believe this week he may be able to add some new hardware to his trophy case.

Notable Top Tier- Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka, and Paul Casey

Mid Tier $7,000 – $9,000

F. Molonari – Since a MC earlier this year at Memorial he has 5 straight top 50 finishes, two of which where top 10s.  His game does set up well here as well, Molonari hits around 70% of GIR and fairways and is able to scramble for par over 60% of the time.  All of which have shown to be important stats over the years here.  I expect him to make the cut and and finish in the top 25 but not win.  Solid play in all formats.

Brian Harman- I absolutely love this guy this week.  In four previous starts at this course Harman has a 69.4 scoring avg. and no missed cuts.  You can also add in that in his previous three starts this year he is beyond hot with the putter avg less than 28 puts a round.  The hot flat stick has resulted in over 17 birdies a tournament for Harman in that same stretch.  If the great short game continues expect to see him on the leader board this week.

Ryan Moore- This is a pick based solely on course history.  Outside of Bubba Watson, no one with more than three starts here has a better scoring avg than Moore at 68.9.  Golf is such a mental game and Moore loves to play here. Five starts with no missed cuts and great scoring, sign me up.

Notable Mid Tier- T. Hatton

Bottom Tier- Below $7,000

Aaron Baddeley – He comes in this week in great form over his last four starts. He’s Avg 17.8 birdies a tournament for that stretch and below par scoring on par 3’s, par 4’s, and par 5’s.  In case your wondering that means his game in on point.  He is my favorite play this week under $7,000 and I believe has upside that includes taking down the win this week.

Notable Bottom Tier plays – Chad Campbell, Chris Stroud, and Jerry Kelly.
